Oh my, cheaters do prosper. A soccer scandal, and a modern morality play

By Matthew Schofield, Kansas City Star editorial board columnist

The Irish knew the Frenchman had cheated. The Frenchman admitted he'd cheated. The millions who were watching on television very clearly saw the cheat.

And there are even videos, looping videos, that show the brief (two seconds) of cheating, again and again, all over the internet.

Matsui, Pettitte bring Yankees home

MVP cranks Game 6 homerMVP cranks Game 6 homerBy Arturo Mora, Kansas City Star Midwest Voices columnist 2009

With a two-run homer, a two-run bases loaded single, and six RBI, World Series MVP Hideki Matsui put the nail in the Phillies coffin and sent the Yankees on the way to a 7-3 win and their 27th world championship, their first since 2000. Series vet Andy Pettitte did his part with 5 2/3 strong innings on only three days rest. It was a great ending to one of the best Series in years.

Play rugby, Chiefs

By Tom Ryan, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

The news is full of discussion about football (that’s the American variety) injuries, short term and long term. Today, added to that, worry that the rough-housing on TV every Sunday will influence the youth playing the game. Very astute.

Recipes for the chefs

By Tom Ryan, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

Our chefs seem to be trying new things in the kitchen each week, various ingredients, local and imported. Today they failed miserably and we must get back to basics. Not tasty in the least. A few suggestions:

- If you’re making a broth, stick to your recipe...refrain from making changes while it simmers.

Chiefs lose, and "Parking Systems" need a system

George Harris Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel 2008

Anytime you see people with "Parking Systems" imprinted on their jackets, you should be afraid. Very afraid.

Afraid as in, afraid you're not gonna get into Arrowhead on time to see the kick-off because the guys in the jackets will route you completely around the stadium before letting you into a lot to park.

Olympics

By Tom Nelson, KC Star Reader Advisory Panel

Like most Americans, I am sure, I was extremely disappointed that the Olympics won’t be held in Chicago in 2016. But, hey, no Olympics have ever been held on the South American continent. It really is their turn.

102 years and counting for Cubs fans—but wait till next year!

By Arturo Mora, Kansas City Star Midwest Voices columnist 2009

About six months ago I posted a piece predicting the Cubs would win the World Series. Not so much. When I wrote that, the Cubs looked great on paper. But you gotta play between the white lines, and now the Wrigley’s just look like a bunch of lazy millionaires. Don’t worry though, there’s always next year!

New York Giants' BBQ appetite

By Tom Ryan, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

Dear Big Mean Giants,
Please be gentle on Sunday. The American Royal BBQ competition may be a good place to “partake of mass quantities” before meeting our Chiefs at Arrowhead. We know you’re in town to do business but we truly believe our city’s cuisine beats anything your NYC restaurants can burn, smoke, or season.

Kansas City hopes for Chicago?

By Tom Ryan, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

How could the 2016 Olympic Games in Chicago possibly affect Kansas City? Should we care? Do we wish the Obamas and our friends up north well? From the resounding silence, it must mean we’re just pondering having to watch the Chiefs get pounded by the Giants on Sunday.

Obama, play ball! Baseball

By Tom Ryan, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

Obama likes to play basketball and it’s great to know that he stays in shape. Any word on his smoking lately? He should take up chewing sunflower seeds and play baseball. Better yet, make him the leadoff hitter for our team, not the pitching coach. After the Letterman Show, enough pitching, already!

Serena’s foot fault reveals tennis taboo

George Harris, Kansas City Star Reader Advisory Panel

For reasons I am at a loss to explain, calling a foot fault is a tennis taboo. In amateur matches players often get irritated if an opponent calls a foot fault, and they defend their error by saying the fault didn’t affect the outcome of the point being played.

Want the World Cup in Kansas City? Sign the petition

By Matt Schofield, Kansas City Star editorial board columnist

The idea of bringing the World Cup seems far off because it is far off.

Even if Kansas City is included in a United States bid, the earliest the games would actually be played at Arrowhead Stadium would be summer 2018 (if not summer 2022).

It wasn't hard to predict the Kansas City Wizards' decision to fire head coach Curt Onalfo.
