Abouhalkah's column: Don't blame Johnson County for KC's fiscal mess

Here's where KC's fiscal problems startHere's where KC's fiscal problems startBy Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Mayor Mark Funkhouser is among the chorus of complainers who think Kansas City doesn’t control its financial destiny.

Instead, a bloc of suburban business and chamber leaders supposedly holds tremendous sway at City Hall.

Sorry, but this contention is flat wrong.

Dear Obama, etc.: It's the economy, stupid

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Perky Palin is winning by answering only her own questions

Sarah Palin is doing exactly what she needs to do: she is proving that if given time to prepare, she can deliver her lines with perky exuberance. Right now she is in a no-lose situation and her disastrous interviews last week appear to be an almost brilliant strategic move. The public will subconsciously compare and contrast, and dismiss her Couric interview as an exception. She is performing more like the Sarah Palin from the 2006 gubernatorial debate, which is great news for McCain. Searching to define herself as both tough and folksy, Palin wants America to perceive her as a cross between Elastigirl from “The Incredibles” and Peggy Hill from “King of the Hill”. Incidentally, she looks like both. Coached or not, she is succeeding in not falling apart next to a very prepared Biden and that’s enough to win her a lot of points.

Minutemen Revisited; with a spin toward future action

Leonard Zeskind, an internationally recognized expert in hate groups, recently posted his take on Kansas City's Minuteman controversy.

The piece does a good job at explaining much of the angst surrounding the Minutemen's message. Zeskind peers past the more banal "we're just opposed to illegal immigration" banter of the group to show how for many Minutemen, it is Hispanic's growing numbers, even those who are U.S.-born, who are of concern for the group. Zeskind's sources: Minutemen who gathered recently in Kansas City.
