Friday editorial: A palatable solution for restaurant's name

A meal at a good restaurant can certainly be therapeutic.

But the notion that someone would stumble into an eatery and mistake it for a pharmacy strikes nearly everybody as farfetched.

That’s why it’s good to see the Missouri Board of Pharmacy agree to work with state lawmakers to resolve the dispute centering o the Smithville restaurant with the word “drugstore” in its name.

Thursday editorial: Weak response to Russia's invasion of Georgia

The reaction of the West to Russia’s invasion of Georgia has been disappointingly tame up to now.

Consider the recent emergency summit of European leaders which, despite hours of deliberations, decided merely to issue another tepid warning.

By Lewis Diuguid, Kansas City Star Editorial Board member

Baby boomers’ ability to contend with Alzheimer’s disease will depend on lessons they pick up today about the scourge.

Monday editorial: Signs of hope on Labor Day 2008

Labor Day is traditionally a time to mark the end of summer and fire up the barbeque.

It’s all a bit backhanded, in a way; we honor work by setting aside a day when most people can be freed from it.

Perhaps you’ve seen him, or heard about him. He’s the child actor who tells the camera, sadly, “I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer.”

He doesn’t have cancer, fortunately. Neither do two other children who make similar claims in a controversial commercial aimed at getting people to forgo hot dogs and processed meats.

A mere 422 million miles from Earth, NASA’s phenomenal planet-searcher, the Phoenix Lander, is busy giving scientists valuable information about life on Mars.

No, not life now, we don’t think. But billions of years ago, there were large bodies of water, one of the key substances for life as we know it. Because of what Phoenix has been busy doing since it touched down May 25, scientists now can confirm the past existence of all this water.

Sunday's editorial: Protect the elderly from greedy banks

Be kind to the elderly, the disabled or veterans. This seems like a reasonable rule for society.

But a recent Inspector General’s report found that many banks are squeezing this group; seizing assets of people who are often dependent on government subsidies for their living expenses. The seizures are to cover debt. Federal law prohibits this practice.
