KU's Bill Self deserves a raise for coaching the Jayhawks to the NCAA title. But the school should not go overboard to keep him.

If he wants the mega-bucks, Self should go coach basketball at Oklahoma State. KU will be fine without him.

No doubt: Self has a proven track record as a great recruiter. And he can sure lead young men to regular-season titles in the Big 12.

But as KU fans know all too well, he hasn't exactly been a great coach when it counts -- in the postseason. Until this year, of course.

So what's the chance Self will repeat this feat? Not good. Only the best coaches of all time have even come close to winning multiple NCAA titles, people like Bob Knight and Dean Smith.

Remember, the job of coaching the Kansas Jayhawks remains one of the best gigs in college basketball.

When Roy Williams left KU in 2003 for North Carolina, doom and gloom surrounded the program, even after Self was hired from Illinois.

But Self recruited well, most of Williams' recruits stayed, and the Jayhawks barely missed a beat when it came to winning lots of games.

Now, if Self leaves, KU will be able to get a good, young coach from another school. Someone who wants to make his mark in Lawrence.

The good, young candidates are out there -- just like Self was in 2003.

If Oklahoma State wants to lavish $40 million or so on Self over 10 years, as has been reported, and Self wants the money -- he's gone.

But if Bill Self truly wants to be remembered as a great coach for all-time, he will stay at the University of Kansas.

It just shouldn't cost KU an arm and a leg to keep him.
