According to breaking reports, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is the subject of a federal investigation after being caught on a wiretap arranging to transport a woman between states for the purpose of prostitution.

It's a little early to know what to make of these reports, but if they are true, you just have to marvel.

Spitzer, lest anyone forget (and they surely won't after today) was the crusading New York prosecutor who left no stones unturned tracking down suspected malfeasance, whether it be Wall Street wrongdoing or questionable contracts by a local school board. His resume includes the arrests of persons connected with at least two prostitution rings.

So Spitzer, of all people, knew the risks involved in illicit liasions. If he indeed was linked to a prostitution ring, it constitutes breathtaking recklessness on a par with Bill Clinton's White House dalliance.
