The University of East Anglia emails are causing a bit of a furor right now. The folks who actually understand what they were writing about (the authors) are a bit puzzled by this.
The emails are part of the normal scientific discussion. There is no proof in them of a conspiracy to lie about climate change. There is no proof in them that current climate change theory is off base. In fact, they reach the opposite conclusion.
They can, however, be viewed more selectively, and less in context, and be made to look as if they're proving whatever the reader wants them to prove.
The furore, therefore, stems from the fact that these are not documents, but pieces of a conversation. Without taking into account the entire conversation, it's really not wise to read anything into them. There's a reason these emails were not intentionally published, and it's not nefarious.
People, and this includes scientists, don't generally publish their emails. Specifically, the university (In Norwich, btw, a lovely place, and full disclosure, my daughter has been a student there the past three years) noted:
"The publication of a selection of stolen data is the latest example of a sustained and, in some instances, a vexatious campaign which may have been designed to distract from reasoned debate about the nature of the urgent action which world governments must consider to mitigate, and adapt to, climate change."
This gets at an important point: Science isn't about moving lockstep, and in climate research, it hasn't. Scientists question findings, their own and those of their peers. These emails are a tiny, and out of context, example of that process.
The UEA response, in it's entirely:
"The publication of a selection of the emails and data stolen from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) has led to some questioning of the climate science research published by CRU and others. There is nothing in the stolen material which indicates that peer-reviewed publications by CRU, and others, on the nature of global warming and related climate change are not of the highest-quality of scientific investigation and interpretation. CRU’s peer-reviewed publications are consistent with, and have contributed to, the overwhelming scientific consensus that the climate is being strongly influenced by human activity. The interactions of the atmosphere, oceans, land, and ice mean that the strongly-increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere do not produce a uniform year-on-year increase in global temperature. On time-scales of 5-10 years, however, there is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will continue to warm, with attendant changes in the climate, for the foreseeable future. It is important, for all countries, that this warming is slowed down, through substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to reduce the most dangerous impacts of climate change. Respected international research groups, using other data sets, have come to the same conclusion.
The University of East Anglia and CRU are committed to scientific integrity, open debate and enhancing understanding. This includes a commitment to the international peer-review system upon which progress in science relies. It is this tried and tested system which has underpinned the assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It is through that process that we can engage in respectful and informed debate with scientists whose analyses appear not to be consistent with the current overwhelming consensus on climate change
The publication of a selection of stolen data is the latest example of a sustained and, in some instances, a vexatious campaign which may have been designed to distract from reasoned debate about the nature of the urgent action which world governments must consider to mitigate, and adapt to, climate change. We are committed to furthering this debate despite being faced with difficult circumstances related to a criminal breach of our security systems and our concern to protect colleagues from the more extreme behaviour of some who have responded in irrational and unpleasant ways to the publication of personal information.
There has been understandable interest in the progress and outcome of the numerous requests under information legislation for large numbers of the data series held by CRU. The University takes its responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Environmental Information Regulations 2004, and the Data Protection Act 1998 very seriously and has, in all cases, handled and responded to requests in accordance with its obligations under each particular piece of legislation. Where appropriate, we have consulted with the Information Commissioners Office and have followed their advice.
In relation to the specific requests at issue here, we have handled and responded to each request in a consistent manner in compliance with the appropriate legislation. No record has been deleted, altered, or otherwise dealt with in any fashion with the intent of preventing the disclosure of all, or any part, of the requested information. Where information has not been disclosed, we have done so in accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation and have so informed the requester.
The Climatic Research Unit holds many data series, provided to the Unit over a period of several decades, from a number of nationally-funded institutions and other research organisations around the world, with specific agreements made over restrictions in the dissemination of those original data. All of these individual series have been used in CRU’s analyses. It is a time-consuming process to attempt to gain approval from these organisations to release the data. Since some of them were provided decades ago, it has sometimes been necessary to track down the successors of the original organisations. It is clearly in the public interest that these data are released once we have succeeded in gaining the approval of collaborators. Some who have requested the data will have been aware of the scale of the exercise we have had to undertake. Much of these data are already available from the websites of the Global Historical Climate Data Network and the Goddard Institute for Space Science.
Given the degree to which we collaborate with other organisations around the world, there is also an understandable interest in the computer security systems we have in place in CRU and UEA. Although we were confident that our systems were appropriate, experience has shown that determined and skilled people, who are prepared to engage in criminal activity, can sometimes hack into apparently secure systems. Highly-protected government organisations around the world have also learned this to their cost.
We have, therefore, decided to conduct an independent review, which will address the issue of data security, an assessment of how we responded to a deluge of Freedom of Information requests, and any other relevant issues which the independent reviewer advises should be addressed.
Statement from Professor Phil Jones, Head of the Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia."

East Anglia CRU Leaked FIles
Matthew:
WRT the conclusion you offer about the impact of the leaked (IMO) CRU files: "This gets at an important point: Science isn't about moving lockstep, and in climate research, it hasn't. Scientists question findings, their own and those of their peers. These emails are a tiny, and out of context, example of that process."-
The very scientific process-the questioning of findings, the sharing of data the refusal to move in lockstep with one's supposed betters (for the purpose of getting on in one's professional life)-these emails show the CRU crew systematically violating every one of those verities. Every one!!! The urge to suppression of dissent, refusal to share data, deletion inconvenient data sets, control of the flow of information: every one of these self-serving instincts parades and preens before the reader of these emails.
If the fudged data and ruinous behaviors appeared suddenly against a backdrop of respected behaviors and proper and open discussion of differences, Matthew MIGHT successfully urge us to "move along, dears, there's nothing to see here. That's right, luv, move right along." To the contrary, however, dissenters and skeptics have been purged, punished and pounded on as flat earthers for even suggesting a review of data was called for before, signing on to AGW and its political consequences.
As such, I don't begrudge these set-upon scientists and commentators their moment of gloating and relief! If only toadying sycophants like you can set aside your emotional investment in AGW and take a hard look at that to which you've sold your soul. I have little patience with pap like your 'report' passing for journalism. Phil Jones et al have ceased science and become politics. You've left the Fourth Estate for a comfy niche among the political elite, as well.
The defenses being raised to defend the contents....
..... of these e-mails are myriad and exhaustive.
But not very convincing.
However, one must admire admire the tenacity of the global warming true believers.
It's all in context
I haven't seen one media story take anything out of context. If you download the originals from wikileaks you can see the entire threads and the media excerpts have been true to the context.
There was clearly a betrayal of world society in an attempt to profit from grants and contracts involved in this. Criminal charges of fraud should be brought against these scientists. They deliberately misled, misrepresented and skewed data to further their own interests.
Two sites of interest are wattsupwiththat.com and wikileaks.org. Watts has published a very detailed photographic analysis of the deterioration of testing methods and sites for temperature monitoring at hundreds of sites throughout the US. This has systematically undermined the validity of temperature data over recent years. Monitoring stations are now routinely placed next to man made heat sources such as air conditioners and blacktop parking lots.
Gotta love this
Pretend these e-mails were from one Republican to another Republican, and ask yourself what the Red Star's response would be.
To be a global warming scientist, one must be so intelligent that they believe they can accurately predict the weather decades into the future, but too stupid to step outside and see what the weather is right now. The entire global warming religion is based on one 25-year period which has then been followed by a 9-year (and sure to grow) period of global COOLING.
Global warming will end up on the ash heap of history much like the scientists who predicted a new Ice Age in the 70s. The only question is how much damage will be done by their softheaded followers in the meantime.
UEA Climate Emails
Matt,
Thank you for your opinion on this subject. it's nice to see a major newspaper comment on the subject, for some reason the major networks have been reticent.
I have to say I don't agree with it, though. For UEA to conduct its own investigation, while useful, will not restore the world's confidence in the CRU.
Given that Jim Inhofe is conducting a congressional investigation, British MP's are conducting their own investigation, SEI is bringing suit against NASA Goddard over 4 year-old FOI requests related to the content of those emails, and there are calls for Phil Johnson's resignation in Britain, in addition to a couple of thousand stories, more or less, on this subject worldwide (according to Google), major pro-AGW figures are expressing dismay, and the literally trillions of dollars involved in Cap and Trade and the Copenhagen meetings, it seems to me that external investigations are more than warranted, in order to restore the credibility of the CRU and East Anglia and the IPCC.
In addition, full disclosure of data and methods are needed immediately to allow a robust and transparent peer review to take place.
If, after all that takes place, and it turns out that the CRU has been correct all along, then we can proceed with clear sight and clear consciences to do whatever is necessary with regard to Climate Change.
Nothing less will be sufficient.
Thanks,
JP
Mr Poynter has hit the proverbial nail on the head....hard.
Thank you JP for a well reasoned, rational presentation in simple language. Many arguments....from both sides .....are presented in a technical or data centric manner that many have difficulty grasping.
Your sharpened focus on the issues of ethicality and validation of facts makes imminent sense.....or at least it should....for anyone arguing from either side.
At this point, the idea of an internal investigation world seem to be a condescending absurdity.
The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.
Release All the Data Now
I have seen a couple of the released emails and the interesting point of the emails is they speak about tricks used to cooberate the global warming storyline.
Release all the data, the methods and the calculations now. If the data is correct as the CRU and Goddard institutes say then the argument is over. If, on the other hand peer reviews of the data show it to be fraudulent then charge the leaders with fraud and discontinue any tax payer dollars to support their efforts.
In the meantime, slow down all laws that deal with global warming until a good analysis of the data is performed and either confirmed or denied.
spin it all you want the
spin it all you want the whole global warming/climate change BS has been exposed, once again, as junk science with no merit behind but the drive for power and money.
People don't buy it...real scienctists don't buy it.
You lose
Racewriter pretends
Race,
Pretending isn't really of value. Let's just look at the facts.
Scientists argue, science doesn't care. The General Theory of Relativity is not a liberal or conservative matter.
I am a constitutionalist. When you somehow connect environmentalism with a political view, you are no longer talking about environment, rather politics.
Lawsuits over scientist e-mails seems a bit weak when their lacks lawsuits over the illegal invasion of Iraq, the failed levies in New Orleans, the water rights violation in Colorodo, the extinction of salmon in major rivers, the poisoning of the air, soil and water your children consume, injest and breath.
I understand that a sunday football game is important, and that beer and chips are mandatory, but really, didn't you want your kids to at least have a chance at the same opportunity?
Earl_E, the "constitutionalist" and "Ron Paul backer"
sounds awfully like what Barbara Boxer would say. Could it be that Earl_E hasn't looked in the mirror lately?
.
Example:
lacks lawsuits over the illegal invasion of Iraq, the failed levies in New Orleans, the water rights violation in Colorodo, the extinction of salmon in major rivers, the poisoning of the air, soil and water your children consume, injest and breath.
Boxter
Twas,
I'm sure you were going to make a point but you cut yourself off...
Or was the point that you had nothing relevant to say about climate change, environmentalism, or man's impact on his future survival so you just made a useless name-drop?
But then that is what is expected of the average American sloth, shout loud, hurl insults, and say nothing.
Just keep drilling and burning. Happy Thanksgiving!
How about another name, Earl_E
how about Chicken Little?
.
Yes, you make intelligent arguments on the environment, but when you threw in the "illegal invasion of Iraq", you told me you are more than just a survivalist. Dennis Kucinich comes to mind.
Iraq
Since escorting the re-flagged oil tankers out of the Persian Gulf in the 1990s I have been very sure that all of the activity in the region is based on oil.
Constitutionally, we have a military to protect the USA, not Exxon oil supply routes nor Iraqi oil fields.
To me, the oil economy is a state supported form of socialism. Yet oil profits are private.
Ron Paul explained about blowback, and the crowd jeered. He said it was illegal to go in, and we should just leave. He mentioned the installment of the Shah of Iran back in the 1950s as the beginning of this unfortunate process, and all the terrorists are just home-boys hating the filthy oil companies.
The average mideasterner gets no benefit from the oil companies, instead just the wrath of our might whenever they assert themselves.
Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks
I agree with your analysis. The reason why the MSM may have little to say is because we have real problems to deal with.
At a time when the world is suffering from an economic problem, the environment continues to show the strain that humanity has placed on its self-cleansing systems.
As usual, the shorter the reader comment, the less likely it has any cogent arguments to present.
Thanks again.
Hmmmm
Earl E wrote "I agree with your analysis. The reason why the MSM may have little to say is because we have real problems to deal with."
I thought that Global Warming was important. I am pretty sure I heard the President say so, both in his campaign and since election. Did I miss something? When did it cease to be a crisis that must be fixed NOW (ro dire things will happen) to not really that important?
My guess it ceased to be important as soon as the scientists involved crossed the rubicon of politics and discredited their whole analysis.
Whatever may happen now will always be tainted. No matter who does what study the results will not have the trust of the public needed to get anything done.
In the realm of science and politics this is pretty important.
