I'll be interested to see what Dennis Moore does in the remainder of his final term in Congress. Freed from the burden of looking toward the next election, will he take some stands, show some fire? Lately he's been a consumate fence sitter.

The Republican primary for the seat Moore is vacating is shaping up as a donnybrook. Just about everybody who's ever run against Moore and lost is getting into the ring (with the notable exception of Adam Taft, who pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud involving campaign funds.)

It'll be interesting to see how much of a moderate-conservative split plays out in the GOP primary. Will outsider groups intervene in the race and demand no-tax pledges and other forms of ideological purity? It'll also be interesting to see what Democrats throw their hats into the ring.

Republican Kevin Yoder, a rising star in the Kansas Legislature, has announced he's forming an exploratory committee. If he's serious about running, he should give up his spot as chair of the Legislature's appropriations committee. It's pretty hard to put together a coherent budget and run for Congress at the same time. And budget chairs aren't making many friends these days. But Yoder, an ambitious and smart politician, no doubt has already figured that out.

One name I haven't seen mentioned today: Pat Colloton, the GOP rep from Leawood. She's an effective legislator who has been rumored as a possible contender for Moore's seat.
