Something as sweeping as health care reform, we’re being told, should have bipartisan support. The creation of the interstate highway system did. And the Civil Rights Act. Ditto the Social Security Act of 1935.
Well, no kidding. Of course health care reform should have bipartisan support — just as so many of our Republican congressmen are insisting. As they work feverishly to keep any trace of bipartisanship from seeping into the vote counts.
“A basic decision was made by the Republican leadership that if you defeat a major initiative like health reform, it could rebound to the benefit of the minority party,” said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, a liberal consumer group that pushes for health care reform.
That’s the strategy Republicans used to jettison Bill Clinton’s health care reform effort.
In a memo that has become required reading for anyone seeking to understand the politics underlying health care, GOP strategist William Kristol warned Republican leaders in 1993 that Clinton’s plan was a “serious political threat” to the party.
“It will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests. And it will at the same time strike a punishing blow against Republican claims to defend the middle class by restraining government,” Kristol wrote.
He suggested that Republicans “allay public concerns about health security” by “pursuing the short list of reforms for which there is already a national consensus.”
That’s pretty much what U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri did recently. Under fire for not producing much in the way of solutions while heading up the GOP Health Care Solutions Group, he trucked out 10 bills proposing boilerplate Republican measures like caps on malpractice awards.
House Minority Leader John Boehner proposed many of the same measures in a bill described as the GOP alternative to “Obamacare.” Unfortunately for Republicans, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that Boehner’s “solutions” would do nothing to reduce the number of uninsured Americans, and would be much less effective at reducing the deficit than the Democratic proposal.
Some senators, believing health care legislation in some form is inevitable, are now looking to make their imprint on a bill.
Will their leadership allow it? Probably not without a fight. Senate GOP leaders frowned upon talks within the Senate Finance Committee intended to produce a bipartisan bill.
“I don’t think you could underestimate how much pressure was placed (on some of the senators) not to continue those conversations,” Pollack said.
Meanwhile, House Republicans reportedly are planning to participate in as many “town hall” type gatherings as possible over the next three weeks, seeking to bring the tea party kettle back to a full boil.
In a lengthy piece published in the Washington Monthly magazine in 1994, writer Jon Meacham, now editor of Newsweek, described Kristol’s plan for deep-sixing health care reform and wrote, “That it worked is a classic example of how Republicans buy off the vast middle class with appealing polemics and short-term fixes.”
Fifteen years later, the GOP has refined the art of polemics. Short-term fixes have resulted in an even more costly and less efficient health care system. We spend $2 trillion a year on health care, and achieve poorer results than nations which do a better job of controlling costs.
We do need comprehensive health care reform, and the best vehicle for achieving that is the bill passed by the Senate Finance Committee.
How crafty of Republicans to now cite lack of bipartisanship as a fatal flaw in President Obama’s health care reform effort, when that’s been their plan from the outset.

Health Care Reform Will Cost Us a Million Lost Jobs
You don't seem to get it, Babs. This is not about partisanship, this is about the MAJORITY of Americans who do not want the government telling them how to run their life. Obamacare will cost tjis nation another million jobs, mostly high-paying ones. Can we afford an unemployment rate of 14%? In my industry, medical sales, we have already lost 30,000 jobs in medical sales this year alone due to the specter of reform. Learn more at http://www.gorillamedicalsales.com
Why california is going bankrupt
http://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2009/02/should_we_let_california_go_ba.html
"This is a state whose politicians, public sector unions and advocacy groups have been living in a fantasy world of overspending, investment-deadening taxation and job-killing regulation."
Hmm, sounds like someone who is now running the country.
It seems to me
That it is Libs like Babs that are doing the whining. This is the Lib's party, they have overwhelming majority in both houses of Congress and the most liberal President EVER. If you Libs want it you can have it, but you are going to have to OWN it. No one owes you 'cover' in the form of voting for something we know will bankrupt the country and ruin the high quality health care people in the US currently enjoy. You want it? Go ahead and vote it in. It will be a royal pain in the back side for Conserevatives to fix when all the progressives and BO get kicked out of office, but that's OK. We already know we'll have a tough job cleaning up all the messes you are making and we won't complain about it either, we'll just FIX it.
Unregulated Market Practices
The unregulated market practices that went on at ENRON cost the United States and the world billions of dollars continue. With deregulation ENRON cost the State of California $9 billion while the FED, SEC and UEC watched and did nothing until it was to late because they had a Democratic governor Gray Davis. With a Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the people of that state still haven't recovered from these unregulated market practices. The ENRON attitude of greed is not new it has been in Wall Street, Washington D C all over the United States of America for years pushing deregulation.
Wall Street and the greedy with deregulation have let what amounts to Ponzi schemes in the form of phony, to good to be true sell of bundled mortgages, unregulated derivatives, global currency arbitrage, hedge futures trading, high-yield investment programs, Offshore investment, and similar schemes all with little or no regulation.
Quote from President George W. Bush speech September 24, 2008
"Once this crisis is resolved, there will be time to update our financial regulatory structures. Our 21st century global economy remains regulated largely by outdated 20th century laws. Recently, we've seen how one company can grow so large that its failure jeopardizes the entire financial system."
The ENRON crisis would have been a good time to have acted, but the Republicans were so intent on deregulating so called, "outdated 20th century laws", that has got us into even deeper do-do. I notice the president is very careful use the word crisis, but we all know what a recession or depression is by any other name.
Now we have a $700 billion bailout bill, the whole worlds financial system has been shaken.
Correction
The Committee Report is 490 pages. The actual Senate bill is 1,504 pages.
Seriously?
This is probably one of the worst opinion articles I have read in recent memory. The author seems to be suffering mainly from two problems:
1. She has no real idea of what is currently happening in the Republican party. I'd ask the author if the picture she is painting is replete with men in smoke-filled fire lit rooms, twirling their mustaches, and hatching evil schemes over port and chess.
Please.
As shown in 2008, the GOP couldn't out-caucus a used tea bag. What is happening right now is a civil war within the party, and even the most liberal of spenders are being forced to stop the Bush-Obama (i.e. "drunken sailor") spending habits or get thrown out next year.
What? Too busy to go interview some people at the Tea Parties and find out yourself? Couldn't find it within yourself to be near the WWI monument on April 15th? Couldn't be bothered to go to the Plaza on July 4th?
2. The author then throws out the $2 Trillion number as if it's a big deal without even noting that the House health care bill that just passed has a $2 Trillion initial start up cost (found on page 215). If Hawaii/Maine/Tennessee/Minnesota/etc are any examples of what to expect, that amount will double within two years of the program being active.
Also of note is the author's ignorance of basic economics by her support of the Senate Finance Committee bill titled "America's Healthy Future Act of 2009" (which currently stands at 490 pages). Among the budget-busting measures that can, do, and will bankrupt the system are the guaranteed issue requirement and community rating system put forth in the bill.
Being against this bill doesn't necessarily mean one is partisan. It could show that there are some people left that have some grasp of basic economics.
One of the commentators before me mentioned this article as a reason why circulation is down. I would add that the author is a prime reason why circulation across the country is down. She wrote what she "felt", did only the minimum research (which itself was from biased sources), and should be charged for dumbing down America.
another pinhead liberal
Hi hj. California is not in financial straits because of Enron. Nice try though.
