By Juanell Garrett, Midwest Voices Panelist 2008

It’s been nearly twenty-four hours since I first heard the news from Fort Hood. A shooter opened fire there, killing thirteen and wounding 30 more. So far there have been no outraged epithets against the killer by the editorial board here on Midwest Voices. What a contrast to May 31st!

On a Sunday afternoon, Ms. Shelly was able to collect her first thoughts about the killing of serial late-term abortionist Dr. George Tiller in approximately three hours; she was back with seconds two hours later, condemning Operation Rescue. Five hours after the shooting, Mr. Abouhalkah extended the stain of Tiller’s murder to pro-life groups everywhere.

Do you think their reticence to chime in this time might have something to do with the religion of the accused shooter? I’m predicting an editorial focusing on the vice of handguns and the virtues of gun control. I’m not expecting much of a reference to Major Hasan’s Muslim background.

President Obama is urging us not to jump to conclusions about the shooting. We can only hope he learned a lesson about not jumping to conclusions back in July in the Cambridge situation.
