Democratic U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri isn't going to let those darn Republicans attack him as a pro-health care kind of guy.
So Skelton has made it clearer than ever that he's going to oppose the Democratic reform measure.
Part of his statement on Wednesday:
At the end of the day, the American people should be able to look at this bill and say that Congress has done a good job. This legislation does not accomplish that goal…it does not represent the right balance for the people I represent and I do not intend to support it.
Skelton's against the public option for health insurance, too.
Gee, does this have anything to do with the fact that Republicans are salivating over the chance to knock out the long-term Democratic force in 2010?

Just pay attention.
Ike Skelton is 78 years old and should have retired years ago. Too many politicians cling to office long after they have outlived any remnant of usefulness. Their only goal is to get re-elected, because life "outside" is too frightening. The sight of 90 year old Robert Byrd, his palsied hands shaking, delivering unintelligible speeches is a sad reminder of what he used to be. Ted Kennedy was terminal, knew it, but still refused to retire. Who can forget the spectacle of 100 year old Strom Thurmond, in the depths of dementia, propped up in a wheelchair, but still filling the role of Senate Armed Forces Chairman.
The fault lies with voters. They pay little or no attention to the actions of their chosen representatives. They merely vote for familiar names.
I'm still seething over the low voting turnout last Tuesday. Too many American citizens are willing to "talk the talk, but are unwilling to walk the walk."
We're about to fail America big time in health care reform
Personally I was looking forward to a positive change in my options for affordable health care. I have none today.
I can't get coverage for a pre-existing condition and dealing with insurance companies....well, let's say I'd rather get a haircut from a blind man.
The Dems want to kill a fly with a sledgehammer and the GOP would like to go bear hunting with a bb gun.
What is most disturbing is the lack of true leadership across the board in Washington.
It's not over, till it's over. But Washington is proving once again who really has their attention - certainly not anyone outside the beltway.

And it's now time for politicians to prepare for it's passing?
Remember the 2006 Immigration Reform Bill? A very big & bi-partisan deal ... but proved (at the very end) unable to actually fly.
There is an 'effect' that we see often in cases like these, following a prolonged working-phase (Immigration Reform was over a year in the works), when 'finally', many Representatives seemingly stampede toward acceptance or rejection.
There are signs that Health Care is now approaching the paid-mourners phase, with all the theatrical wailing & rending ... and let us not forget, the all-important Blame Game.
To my eye, this is a lot less about the supposed foibles of Ike Skelton than it is about the 'condition' of the Health Care Reform Bill ... which now looks quiet possibly to be "terminal".
Rep. Skelton is more likely just acknowledging what's now becoming increasingly evident.

Just because Skelton disagrees with you doesn't make him wrong. It just means that he disagrees with you. The only toadie in this scenario is you.
Skelton was elected because the majority of the people in his district believe he best represents them from the available candidates. They have done so several times. He is right to represent the people of his district to the best of his belief.

Skelton sickens me. He has become a total sell out to the kookdom. He once was strong on defense and supported our military, now he drafts the resolution AGAINST the surge that gave us victory in Iraq, at San Fran Nan Gram;s direction; just like a good little lap dog.
Retire Ike, save yourself the embarrassment.

....do they not eat their own or what? I remember when some AA congressmen who supported Hillary Clinton were threatened with a primary challenger if they didn't support Obama. Classy.
Skelton is a good Dem and represents his district well. So does Cleaver.
For the Dems to throw their own party members to the wolves because THEIR LEADERS can't get their sh!t together and put together a health reform bill that speaks at least to the most basic problems is just cowardly and pathetic.

Anyone who pays attention knows that Skelton represents a very conservative district. If he truly represents his constituents he will most certainly oppose the bank-breaking proposals being proffered by the leaders of his party.
So, Yael, the answer is no, it has little do to with the fact that Republicans are salivating to knock him out of his seat, and everything to do with integrity in a public representative.
We have become accustomed to the liberal bias of this editorial board, but articles such as this really serve no purpose other than to illustrate the lack of common sense and journalistic expertise required to become a leader at the Star. It is certainly no surprise that this paper is slowly dying.
