The FAA has yanked the licenses of the two Northwest pilots who claim to be so engrossed with their laptop computers they overshot the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.
The way things turned out, it's kind of ironic the pilots were working so hard to figure out their new work schedules. They won't need them now.
On a bigger scale, this shouldn't be the end of the discussion. The two pilots were in violation of rules, but pilot distraction is a problem in general, and so is pilot sleepiness -- the first cause that was suspected for this bizarre incident. Passengers really want to know that their pilots are well-rested and on the case.

You know the FAA did not even take their laptops, huh?

The story here is now eclipsing the pilots on Flight 188.
The FAA itself (and others) are behaving in an abnormal way.
Their investigation is so lax, the FAA did not bother to even ask for the pilots' notebooks. You know that, don't you?
FAA investigations are notorious for their thoroughness ... but not this one: They ain't investigatin' nothin'!
Why not? What the heck is going on? And why are media journalists not raising a stink, since what is going on at the FAA is now every bit as fishy as whatever was going on in the cockpit of Flight 188.

One of the large practical problems here is that millions of Americans are ex-military. 'Watch-standing' is a major distinction between military & civilian 'lifestyles', and a civilian airline pilot's duty in the cockpit is virtually identical to military watch-standing.
'We' - too many of us - seriously know what it is to sit in a cockpit with a bunch of instruments and a squawking speaker or headphones ... night after night, month after month, year after year. These guys had done this for 20,000 hours - and that's typical.
In the military, punishment for dozing off on watch includes execution. History offers only a few examples of it coming to that - and none recently - but sleeping or other deriliction on watch always draws stiff treatment, and is frequently quite serious.
So, when Americans read this story about these pilots becoming so engrossed in a scheduling program on their laptops ... well, it's not believable. It bogus to the bone. And the FAA ... and the media ... are playing along with it.
Bullpucky. Whatever was going on in that cockpit, it wasn't what the pilots are saying, and the FAA is trying to sell to the public ... and then hurriedly get swept under the rug.
My inclination is to be mildly alarmed. I cannot imagine that the FAA (not to mention, the Oval Office) would agree to cover up for, say, an orgy with Flight Attendants. Or even an orgy with the passengers. I cannot begin to believe that the FAA et al would cover up for the pilots sleeping for halfway across the continent.
The only highly-imaginative 'explanations' that would begin to rate this kind of exceptional treatment from the FAA and other top-level components of the Federal government ... are all worrisome. They have to be ... or this cover up would not have been the chosen avenue.
Something scary happened on Flight 188 ... scary enough that the FAA, the White House, the Pentagon, etc, all agreed very quickly to just shine it on & git on down the road as quick as possible.
