For good reasons, abortion supporters are angry about fundraising events scheduled to help defend Scott Roeder, the accused murderer of abortion doctor George Tiller.

Then again, this is par for the course for anti-abortion forces. They are relying on outrage about abortion to propel them to financial success.

In short, the anti-abortion forces want to make money off tactics that have included killing abortion providers and bombing clinics -- all in a sacred effort to stop future abortions.

So as The Star outlined Sunday, the anti-abortion forces hope to use E-Bay and other web sites to sell a number of items to raise money for Roeder's defense.

They include a cookbook compiled by a woman in prison for abortion clinic bombings and arsons.

One of the most graphic items that might be for sale is a pencil art drawing.

"It has David with a slingshot in one hand and the head of Goliath in his other hand and the name ‘Tiller’ on Goliath’s forehead," said Regina Dinwiddie, a Kansas City anti-abortion activist. "On the corpse on the ground, it says ‘child-murdering industry.’ "

Abortion supporters warn, probably accurately, that the auctions and sales could lead to even more violence against abortion providers. The sales, after all, glorify violence against abortion providers and their backers.

Clearly the anti-abortion forces want to get publicity for Roeder and his cause. They have succeeded in that much, so far.

Whether they will succeed in raising a lot of cash for his courtroom defense will be another matter. In part, that will depend on how serious people are about participating in such an event.

Given the past actions of abortion critics, though, they may have a lot more success than pro-abortion forces might hope.
