I hope this doesn’t get personal, but the Washington Post hasn’t helped the discussion, by releasing General McChrystal’s confidential memo asking for more troops and using the “F bomb”…worse than that one…his bomb was failure.
Bob Woodward reports, but below, read the General’s unclassified words and judge for yourself.

I hope this flap doesn’t affect the General’s position as commander. He has a great deal to do today and in the future. Sure, he’s used to the bright lights and microphones, but what I sense is that some media organizations want to make this personal and send the General packing in the process.
The Post’s timing is perfect with the G20 this week. Timing is everything.

Undermining political control
The sad thing about this leak was that the Washington Post and whoever the leaker was are undermining civilian control of the military. As any student of Clausewitz knows, war is not just the military doing things- there is always the political side. There are tons of requests from Afghanistan- always have been- and for whatever reason some were denied.
Sometimes they were denied by CENTCOM. Sometimes they were denied by the Joint Staff. Sometimes they were denied by the SECDEF. And, yes, sometimes they were denied by the President. The reason is that you can't just look at Afghanistan in seclusion. The U.S. is busy in many different places. There are domestic political issues as well- Senator Levin is one example. And there is the President's final decision once all the political and military ramifications are studied.
Unfortunately, this leak will put pressure on the political side that will undermine efforts elsewhere. These second and third order effects may well never be brought to light- or they could take awhile to notice. Regardless, this was a request that wasn't coupled with all the information- and Americans will hopefully realize that and not jump to conclusions. Sure, some will use this to attack the President- but I'm sure they would attack him anyway.
Let's let the National Command Authority study the issue from all sides, gather all pertinent information, work with all the branches of government, and come to a good decision- instead of one rushed and politicized because of a leak.
Decsion Time

When you hand pick your general, would you not provide him your guidance and intent on what you want accomplished and when the general comes back with a strategy it is either in line with your guidance and intent or it is not. How much time does the president need to figure this out?
Removing the taliban from power, setting up a democratic afghanistan, and removing AQ from afghanistan sounds pretty decisive to me. You could argue Bush's nation building polcies were insufficient, but he was decisive.
Lastly, the president does not have months to make this decision. If he decides to go along with his generals it will take months to begin the deployments of the additional troops, just in time for the spring offensive. These troops will have to come from Iraq, thus you will have to replan the security arrangements in Iraq that will allow for a quicker draw down than is already planned. Obama needs to decide on his strategy and course of action now, he has had 8 months in office and the appointment of his general and security team to develop the courses of action. It is now time to decide.
