New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg puts many other officials to shame when it comes to promoting strong smoking bans.

His latest target: City officials may pass rules to halt smoking in hundreds of city parks and along miles of city beaches.

More power to you, Mr. Mayor, in your effort to cut smoking even further, which helps slash medical expenses for low-income people.

Meanwhile, the people of Missouri and Kansas can't even get one of their state legislatures to approve a statewide ban on smoking.

How pathetically weak both states have been.

Lawmakers ought to grow a spine and follow Bloomberg's actions of earlier this decade, when he and other elected city officials got tough with smoking.

The move has paid off. Fewer and fewer people now smoke in the city, mostly because it's illegal to do so in many public places.
