Tennis fans are going to remember for a long time the ugly sportsmanship of Serena Williams on Saturday night.
A hot-headed Williams lost her U.S. Open semi-final in stunning fashion.
As a result, Kim Clijsters moved on to the finals Sunday.
The incredibly boorish behavior by Williams took away from a superb performance by Clijsters, who outplayed Williams much of the match.
Williams' problems started in the first set, when she angrily slammed her racket onto the court and broke it as she lost 6-4.
That was her first code warning.
Then, down 6-5 in the second set, and with Clijsters needing just two points for the victory, Williams was called for a foot-fault on her second serve.
Williams exploded, moved in menacing fashion toward the line judge who had made the call, with her racket extended. Williams reportedly yelled obscenities at the female judge.
The foot fault put Williams at match point.
But suddenly, her abusive behavior toward the line judge became Williams' second code warning of the night.
And, just like that -- with the lost point being match point -- Williams had lost the semifinal and Clijsters had won.

Serena has...
....always been a sore loser. I don't care what sport you are talking about but respect for the officials is a part of the game. Kudos to the line judge for not taking that crap.
Serena was able to dismiss her behavior as "being caught up in the moment" (isn't that the most overused phrase now)--which IMO makes it worse.
This has nothing to do with being female and everything to do with being classless.
It is sad
that this is taking up space. It allows people like vals to make stupid in accurate comments. Johnny Mac was hit with points penalties all the time when he directed his anger at a line judge. The head judge does allow a bit more and John knew and used that to his advantage.
This is a simple example of an extremely talented athelete who was playing poorly and never had to become an adult. She deserves everything she has earned, money does not make you mature your actions do.
Shocked
As a minority woman, I've been thrilled at the presence of the Williams sisters in US Tennis.
While Venus has just been a joy to watch and support, I've had to work at feeling the same way about Serena, who's never demonstrated emotional maturity or class towards her competitors, never expressed remorse for any of her own transgressions. But all along, I've excused her because it's been within the game, her lack of grace directed at opponents.
However, the events last night were shocking. I cannot forgive her for her malice, her foul malice towards a small, dorky looking asian line judge simply doing her job. She called a foot fault. That's her job. It looked like a foot fault to me, but I allow that others might not have seen it that way.
But in which world are we living in, where that allows you to threaten the poor line judge with such dark and vicious anger? If you say to someone "I'm going shove a F* ball down your F* throat", how are you not threatening them, as Serena claimed blatantly in her press conference?
It's said that times of stress reveal one's character, rather than shape it - and her moment of understanding that she was about to lose to Kim Clijsters revealed just how dark and ugly the Serena Williams character is. Malice towards one and all, and nary a word of regret, apology or even admission...I will never watch a Serena WIlliams match again.
Female Competitor
I use to be an avid watcher of tennis and I don't recall John McEnroe ever losing a point when he would interrupt the game with tirade after tirade.
Is it because Williams is female? Also on the replay afterwards it showed she didn't have a foot fault. I'm not condoning her actions but once again we seem to have a double standard.

I cannot believe what I am reading........... Yael T. Abouhalkah , if you keep up this type of writing, many will consider you a reporter.
Now, I am not sure this is your goal: perhaps a by-product of just filling space for the newspaper.
But, very impressive just the same....... take the credit.
