With the death of one abortion provider still fresh in the public's mind, an anti-abortion group has set its sights on driving another doctor who provides legal services to women out of business.

Of course, the Operation Rescue group says it will do so peacefully this weekend, with protests, not guns.

Their victim: LeRoy Carhart, who works in Bellevue, Neb., outside Omaha.

Abortion rights protesters also have showed up at Carhart's clinic this weekend, to defend his rights to provide services to women.

From The Associated Press:

Carhart has become the central figure in the nation's abortion debate since an abortion opponent allegedly gunned down Dr. George Tiller in Wichita on May 31. Carhart, who was close friends with Tiller and performed abortions at his clinic, has said he hopes to open a Kansas facility to offer late-term abortions and other services Tiller provided.

Supporters of Carhart -- who correctly called the protests "harassment" against him -- have tried to rally around the doctor.

Good idea.

But even as police patrol the area this weekend, everyone knows it will take just one crazed anti-abortionist wielding a gun to end Carhart's life, just as happened with Tiller.
