President Barack Obama took the high road Thursday in responding to U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins' racially tinged comment that the GOP needs a "great white hope."
The Kansas Republican earned national headlines -- and a lot of national scorn -- because of her embarrassing comments made last week at a town hall meeting in Hiawatha. She said the GOP needed bright, sharp leaders to combat Democrats and Obama. She then named three white congressmen as potential leaders.
In Massachusetts, Obama's viewpoint became known Thursday after Jenkins apologized earlier in the day (with the lame "If I offended somebody..." excuse).
White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters:
I saw that report. I also saw that her spokesperson backpedaled and said that that was a poor choice of words. We obviously give Congresswoman Jenkins the benefit of the doubt."
And why not?
Without piling on, Obama keeps the spotlight on Jenkins and her poor choice of words. Smart politics on the president's part.
Jenkins maintained she didn't know the racial connotations behind the "great white hope" phrase.
The phrase goes back decades to the racist attitudes of white Americans who wanted to find a boxer to defeat the heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson, who was black, in the early 1900s.

I wonder if Obama ever
I wonder if Obama ever apologized to his grandmother for calling her a "typical white person"?
What he should be apologizing for is what he's doing to this country.
Say what you mean, and mean what you say.
There are no black Republican members of congress, governors, nor big city mayors. Furthermore, there are unlikely to be any in the near future, despite the best efforts of Mr Steele. Therefore, any new Republican leaders with fresh ideas most probably will be white. Ms Jenkins was simply being factual.
Strangely enough, if there were a representative mix of blacks among Republican politicians and Ms Jenkins used the restrictive phrase: "Republicans need a great white hope", that would be prejudicial.
I don't believe she needs to apologize. She is much too young to remember the bitterness associated with the boxer Jack Johnson, and probably hasn't read about him nor seen the movies.
"Never explain, never complain".
Calling for an apology - for what?
Come on. Every time a GOP member speaks, this administration is recording every word and trying to find a "connotation". The President has time to comment on this? The administration has time for this?
How about he does his job - in the white house and get us some new manufacturing jobs? Or maybe defend our freedom. Or figure out how to stop spending my money like I have an endless supply of it.
This is reporting? Unreal.
Please, I doubt that Jenkins
Please, I doubt that Jenkins even knows who Jack Johnson was. Lighten up!
Why is it that conservatives have to be so politically correct but liberals can say any racist, stupid thing they want and they just mis-spoke.
Jenkins receives death threat

Yet continues to hold town hall meetings. She has more courage than the Yellow Dog Dennis Moore.
I think....
...I will be sending $25 to Jenkins re-election efforts in the next week or so. It seems if Yael has his britches in a wad over something so trivial then this lady deserves my support.
This whole thing is just another example of garbage journalism--and really, why did ANYONE ask for Obama's opinion in the matter? Is it because he's black?? Well, being black got him where he is today....but, I digress.....
Poor choice of words from Jenkins...spokesperson backpedaled on what she said...no apology should be expected nor should she provide one. Sound familiar...
This is the sideshow the Dems want when they have their pants down to their ankles.
Ditto

Me too.

I will also be sending Jenkins a donation for her campaign.
No, she didn't
Jenkins didn't apologize. That's the problem. Nor did she show any awareness of why what she said was offensive and embarrassing. A true apology is necessary.
Maybe she'll offer a true apology
After Dick Durbin offers an actual apology for comparing our troops to Nazis and the Khmer Rouge.
"I offer my apology for those offended by my words." - Durbin
Does America Get an Apology...
For all the continuing RACIAL preferences in hiring and contract awards?
These offend me since we are "supposed" to now be color-blind, but the affirmitive action nonsense continues.
Where is my "sincere apololgy" and, more importantly, the end to these obvious racial programs?
Also, when you tell Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to stop playing their racial cards, I will be more believing of your outrage.
"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money,"
less then 15 months of this insanity
I see all the
Star's intern trolls are out in force lately.
Get over it. People sometimes say something dumb which doesn't convey what they mean at all, it's not racist, it's not meant to offend anybody, it's just a comment that didn't come out right. She apologized, it should be accepted.
Behind the comment
First to those who say get over it, racism is not a card to be played - I remind them of the race card played recently by prominent right wing media figures calling Obama a racist, and more creatively Sotomayer a reverse racist. It is clearly still an issue.
Jenkins was a competent state office holder as treasurer and proved moderate enough to oust a true conservative, Jim Ryun, to become a Congresswoman. I don't know her heart, but believe if there were true racist overtones, they would have appeared sooner.
I find two other items more troubling for the Representative. First, the non-apology while lame, has become safe - but to further excuse the use of the phrase because she "didn't know the history" is not excusable. I'm younger than Jenkins, and remember as a child when no one could compete against Muhammad Ali, there were discussions of needing a "great white hope" to bring whites viewers back to the sport. You don't have to know the full history to know it is racist in nature.
Even if I buy the explanation, the lapse of judgment to use a phrase that she clearly is aware of, but not aware of it's history, is not acceptable. Don't use language that you do not understand. We deserve a Representative and leader that is more knowledgeable of history, and intelligent enough to choose words within the range of their intellect and vocabulary.
As a side note, I also find praise of Eric Cantor as an intellectual bright new star of the party just faulty personal judgment. Support of Cantor's leadership completes the picture that she clearly more interested in being an obstacle to progress than being a part of it.
Very ignorant comment

First, Jenkins did not oust Jim Ryun. Nancy Boyda did that in 2006.
Second, white viewers did not turn off the television when Ali boxed. His bouts were some of the most watched in history, and they were watched by all races.
Third, for those who say Jenkins' comments reflects a lack of intelligence, I have to remind you once again about Obama's comment concerning Special Olympics and his comments concerning his grandmother being a "typical white person." How many more comments of this type would Obama make if he were not so dependent on his TelePrompter?
Typical ignorant response
Boyda did oust Ryan in 2006. However, Ryan tried to reclaim his seat in 2008. He was ousted, or beat, by Jenkins in the primary, which is what I was referring to. She campaigned as a moderate against conservative Ryan.
Ali / Frasier and Ali / Foreman were most watched, but those numbers were gone by the mid to late 1970s. There was no interest in matching Ali against white opponents, even if they were over matched? How do you explain Chuck Wepner, Joe Bugner, Jean-Pierre Coopman, Jerry Quarry, Rudi Lubbers, or Richard Dunn?
I can’t argue what if scenarios on the teleprompter, but the situation and outcome were different about the Special Olympics. Jenkins was in a town hall answering a serious question; where Obama made a lame joke on the Tonight Show about himself and his bowling game. More importantly, Jenkins best move is to explain she is ignorant of history. Obama immediately called the head of the Special Olympics to directly apologize and admit his offensive comparison was wrong.
More ignorance

You can't oust someone from an office they don't hold. Therefore, Jenkins beat Ryun (note the spelling, ignoramus). She dod not oust him.
It was inappropriate for Obama to compare his bowling to someone in the Special Olympics. I suspect most Special Olympians could out-bowl that sissy.
Yael is a nice guy
It seems pretty fishy to me. Who doesn't know what great white hope means? It seems calculated in that the word "hope" was part of Obama's campaign. To parody it by using the "great white hope" phrase really looks like political strategy. Then to back pedal looks like having your cake and eating it. Maintain respectability and pander to the racists at the same time.
Just to say
I'd like to give Rep. Jenkins the benefit of the doubt. But I'm not inclined to accept the apology of "sorry if I offended you". Not going to happen. So, if Lynn wants to speak up, now is the time.
Lynn = moron
You know what? Great white hope isn't just a saying. It was always overtly racial - white man over the black man. The term was coined for a boxing match between James Jeffries and Jack Johnson.
"Six years after retiring, Jeffries made a comeback on July 4, 1910 at Reno, Nevada. He fought champion Jack Johnson, who had staked his claim to the heavyweight championship by defeating Tommy Burns at Rushcutters Bay in Australia in 1908.
The fight, which was promoted and refereed by legendary fight promoter Tex Rickard, and became known as "The Fight of the Century", soon became a symbolic battleground of the races. The media, eager for a "Great White Hope", found a champion for their racism in Jeffries. He said, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro."[1] A furor was created at the fight, as a ringside band played, "All coons look alike to me".
I'd Like to say Lynn Jenkins was just ignorant, but as I'm a white middle class homemaker, I can't give her the benefit of the doubt. She's a racist, through and through, and it's now my job to see she isn't reelected. Hopefully, even the people of the "free state" are embarrassed.
Yael is a racist
Get on with your life. Racism is so 1960s.
Yael you can't get over yourself
The great white hope is a figure of speach. Obama is black and is the president.......so get over this black white business. It's always black people who keep raising the race card. I'm getting plenty fed-up, when free speech and common sense always comes down to race. Enough already.....We can depend on you Yael.....always pushing your paranoid views.
What can Obama say?
Obama characterized his own grandmother as a "typical whiter person" and cracked a "joke" at the expense of those in Special Olympics. He would be a hypocrite if he made an issue out of Jenkins' words.
"In Massachusetts, Obama's viewpoint became known Thursday after Jenkins apologized earlier in the day (with the lame "If I offended somebody..." excuse)."
I don't recall Yael saying the same thing when Sen. Durbin offered the same lame "If I offended somebody..." excuse after he compared our own troops to Nazis and the Khmer Rouge.
