A new NBC News poll shows why President Barack Obama's health care plan is in trouble: Americans are ignorant about key parts of it.
This won't come as a great surprise to supporters of reform.
They know the GOP as well as other backers of American's costly, ineffective health care system have spent millions on a media campaign to mislead America.
Straight from the NBC News poll story:
Majorities in the poll believe the plans would give health insurance coverage to illegal immigrants; would lead to a government takeover of the health system; and would use taxpayer dollars to pay for women to have abortions — all claims that nonpartisan fact-checkers say are untrue about the legislation that has emerged so far from Congress.
Oh, let's not forget the inane "death panels" charge made by former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and others.
Forty-five percent think the reform proposals would allow the government to make decisions about when to stop providing medical care for the elderly. That also is untrue: The provision in the House legislation that critics have seized on — raising the specter of “death panels” or euthanasia — would simply allow Medicare to pay doctors for end-of-life counseling, if the patient wishes.
Of course, one of the problems with all the misleading information put out by Republicans and other critics is this:
Obama and the Democrats have kowtowed to that campaign. Just last week, Democrats backed away from having end-of-life counseling be part of a Senate committee bill on health care.
Why? Because Palin's absurd charge had received so much publicity and because Americans who are ignorant of the truth complained so loudly about the bogus information.
Just sad.

I agree
yael, your campain of lies and misdirection does hurt the debate. Let's take a few,
1. Focus on the "death panel". Forget the "death panel" crap, how is consulting with your doctor on this not covered? I know my parents have discussed it with their dr as I have with mine as part of a normal appointment.
2. Keep your current insurance. My company has changed providers every year for the last 3. Now they will have to have a plan that meets some federal requirements. I'm sure that won't be a problem...
3. Need more competition. See number 2 above, seems pretty competitive.
4. Illegals not covered. But a seperate equality clause is in the bill. Don't we already have such laws, why is this in there? Again refer to public school access.
I haven't even gone into cost lies, medicare, medicaid going bankrupt, rationing (guess the o will perform the miracle of the fish and loaves of bread since he is going Biblical on us) and almost endless other problems. Yes I agree, you and the administration are a big problem.
Of course Americans are
Of course Americans are ignorant of the Bill, it's 1000 pages long. Democratic leaders should have written a shorter bill if they really wanted Americans to read it. Truth is that they made the bill 1000 pages long so they could hide all the weird things they were putting in it. Check out this debate blog: http://www.healthcaredebateblog.com/
No More Health Catrina !
Let's set up the Equation !
1. All across the spectrum share the urgent need for the reform as the course today is financially unsustainable. By the way, how do we pay for it ?
Let's make it affordable while improving quality.
2. Of all choices on the table, savings via efficiency is the best, and Removing Wastes alone is Enough to Meet the Goal.
As one instance, please visit http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111967435, you will be stunned !
No one knows just how much medical fraud there is, and estimates range from from $600 to $6000 billion over the next decade lost to it.
And, in May 2009, the Obama administration announced a new task force made up of officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Health
and Human Services to work on health care fraud.
3. Enough Room For Savings !
Many reformers recognized roughly 30 percent of all health-care spending in the U.S. -some $700 billion a year- might be wasted on medical abuse, unnecessary procedures, unnecessary visits to the doctor, overpriced pharmaceuticals, bloated insurance companies, and the most inefficient paper billing systems imaginable, and payment reform could solve this problem.
Provided the American people pay around twice the amount of the efficient systems, the result is still well below them, the ratio of waste might be estimated to far more than 50% in the U.S.
Let's be conservative regarding the ratio. Even If as little as 10% of savings apply to the combined Medicare and Medicaid cost of $923.5bn per year, as of July, the savings of $923.5bn over the next decade are possible.
And when these savings add to the already allocated $583 billion, the savings of wastes involving so called "doughnut hole" , the unnecessary subsidies for insurers, medical abuse, exorbitant costs by the tragic ER visits etc, the concern over revenue might be a thing of the past.
As a matter of fact, with the promising redesign in the pipeline, some patient-focused clinics in 10 regions have already achieved 16% of savings in Medicare while their quality scores are well above average.
Please be 'sure' to visit http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/opinion/13gawande.html?hp for credible evidences !
Thankfully, the provisions in the reform include more expansive, systematic policies such as 'a patient's outcome-based payment system' than they have. I for one firmly believe this American innovation, 'a patient's outcome-based payment system' , is capable of turning profit-oriented practices into patient-focused system / value.
Dr. Armadio at Mayo clinic says, "If we got rid of that stuff (waste), we save a third of all that we spend and that is 2.5 trillion dollars on health care. A third of that and that is 700 billion dollars a year. That covers a lot of uninsured people."

4. Some say, if the reform package is affordable and improve quality, then the inflation/bankruptcy-oriented market can not last, thereby competition should begin with our unfair, unsustainable market value, or let's make another insurer-friendly scheme, even though the inflation/bankruptcy-oriented market share the need for change.
5. CONCLUSION = THE WILL OF REFORM, NOT COST.
The runaway premium similar to the peak fuel price last year and left so many folks in despair insists on staying the course with the attitude 'unchanged', clearly this trend could bankrupt individual, business, and government. Now the government subsequently is tasked with these two main assignments, first, to address premium inflation, second, to expand coverage to all in urgent need.
In order to cover all and not to add to the deficit, the public option can not set the same rates of private market, rather, it needs to have BALANCING function to keep it in check in terms of INFLATION, too. Unfortunately, this 'unavoidable' direction is aggressively being accused by the runaway premium, citing government 'take-over' .
Under the circumstances the energy bill to determine human future and the other major issues are presently piled up, who wants to waste time making enemies ?, which also does not benefit the forthcoming election.
with the heartbreaking tears in mind (Nearly 11 Million Cancer Patients Without Health Insurance), private market also needs changes and should join together to complete this reform , as promised, otherwise, the runaway premium only has itself to blame while new firms are filling the void with competitive deals.
And It can be said that fair competition starts with a fair, sustainable market value.
However, Job-based coverage (indirect payment) and a limitation code over transfer, mandate code, and ample capital, reduced ER costs, IT base to streamline the administrative processes and trim the costs might be favorable to the private market. Over time, supposedly, the public plan will concentrate more on basic, primary cares, and the private insurers will provide their clients with differentiated services.
Let me repeat; No More Health Catrina, No More Bankruptcy Of Middle Class !

-- Except For The Underinsured, The Uninsured Alone outnumber The Entire Population In Canada --
Thank You !

So who is ignorant?
So, Americans are ignorant for believing in death panels and federal funding of abortion?
Gee.. then so is President Obama himself.
As a candidate:
He promised Planned Parenthood, that any reform would include abortions.
He also noted that a council needed to be setup to "guide" America in how to stop paying for end of life care.
Sorry, Yael, your hero believes in the same things as everyone else, he just thinks abortions and death panels are good things.
Illegal immigrants
Scott Parks just made a good point on KMBZ. If ObamaCare will not cover illegal immigrants, then Democrats need to subtract the 10-12 million illegal immigrants from the total of "Americans" they say have no health insurance.
It gets better
Yael has, for the 4th time this year, received single story coverage on Newsbusters for his silly ditortions that triggered this thread.
As a daily reader of Newsbusters I can state with reasonable conviction that puts him in Newsbusters top 10 most liberally biased editorial writers nationally this year!!
Congrats Yael.!!. You've earned it honestly.

And yet the news busters site did nothing to actually disprove anything in Yael's article. It only railed on him for implying that dissenters were ignorant.
News busters and Yael are one in the same. The only difference is their political slant. Read behind the lines and make decisions for yourselves.
"Just sad", indeed!!!
I visit media watchdog sites most every day. In my visit to Newsbusters (one of the best on the conservative side)last hour it was interesting that one of their reports (link) stated that NBC had engaged in the egregious, but increasingly common "network poll" habit called "push polling".
From that article: "By its push polling, NBC is not simply reporting the news—it is blatantly attempting to shape public opinion."
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-finkelstein/2009/08/19/nbc-push-polling-obamacare
Gee, no wonder Yael only referenced the poll rather than link to it. How sad is it, Yael?
Media Bias
Where is the journalst skepticism of a liberal newspaper quoting a liberal TV outlet to establish fact? Would you accept Fox News statements as fact? Will illegal immegrants be turned away for medical services at emergency rooms? Does anyone, even at the Star, not think that Obama and friends will not want a government takeover, given their recent history of statements to the contrary and auto and bank dealings? Also,at a minimum,I am sure tax payer money will be used for abortions when the physical or mental health of the mother is brought up. I guess the administration's postion is that they were actually for all of these positions before they were against them. Or vice versa, depending on what the newest poll shows.
Abortion coverage
Peter Orszag, an Obama adviser, had this exchange with Chris Wallace on Fox News:
WALLACE: Are you prepared to say that in a government public-funded, taxpayer-funded public health insurance plan that no taxpayer money will go to pay for abortions?
ORSZAG: I think that that will wind up being part of the debate. I am not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It's obviously a controversial issue, and it's one of the questions that is playing out in this debate.
WALLACE: So you're not prepared to rule out...
ORSZAG: I'm not prepared to rule it out.
So if the Obama administration will not rule out abortion coverage in the government option, how can NBC News characterize the belief that the government option will cover abortion as a myth?
See, here is the problem
WALLACE: Are you prepared to say that in a government public-funded, taxpayer-funded public health insurance plan that no taxpayer money will go to pay for abortions?
ORSZAG: I think that that will wind up being part of the debate. I am not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It's obviously a controversial issue, and it's one of the questions that is playing out in this debate.

So if the Obama administration will not rule out abortion coverage in the government option, how can NBC News characterize the belief that the government option will cover abortion as a myth?
Scared sheetless. That's the problem with Dems in general and this POTUS.
Abortion is legal. Supposedly the majority of Americans support the Roe v Wade decision. Supposedly the POTUS and a majority of Dems in Congress are PRO-CHOICE. Yet, they are unable and very unwilling to stick their necks out and say, NO or YES to this question.
This is why Dems lose policy debates. No spine. No balls. Fear. Scared. Chicken. (fill in the blank)
Read what a senate bill says:
Which 'National Network of Community-Based Organizations' Will Health-Care Bill Fund to Monitor Your Diet and Weight?
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
By Edwin Mora
CNSNews.com) – The health care reform bill approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) would provide federal grants to state and local governments and a “national network of community-based organizations” to "promote healthy living and reduce disparities" and to monitor people's weight, eating, exercise habits and other individual behaviors that affect health at the community level.
The language instituting the program, entitled "Community Transformation Grants," is on pages 382-387 of the bill as posted on the committee's Web site.
The bill states that only three types of entities will be eligible to receive grants under the program: "a--(A) State government agency; (B) local government agency; or (C) national network of community-based organizations."
Neither the White House nor the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee responded to inquiries from CNSNews.com about exactly what organzations would be eligible for the grants as a "national network of community-based organzations" and exactly how these community-based organizations would operate.
The HELP Committee is the only Senate committee to have voted so far on a health care reform bill. The minority office of the HELP Committee, under Ranking Member Mike Enzi (R-Wy.), referred questions to the office of the committee chairman, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.). Kennedy’s office did not respond to CNSNews.com inquires about the provision.
The language of the bill says that the secretary of health and human services, acting through the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can award the grants “for the implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of proven evidence-based community preventive health activities in order to reduce chronic disease rates, address health disparities, and develop a stronger evidence-base of effective prevention programming.”
The community-based organizations that get the federal grants must submit a plan to HHS that “includes the policy, environmental, programmatic, and infrastructure changes needed to promote healthy living and reduce disparities.”
These plans can include “activities” to create “healthier school environments, including increasing healthy food options, physical activity opportunities, promotion of healthy lifestyle and prevention curricula, and activities to prevent chronic diseases.”
The language of the bill says, "Activities within the plan shall focus on (but not be limited to) ... (iv) assessing and implementing worksite wellness programming and incentives; (v) working to highlight healthy options at restaurants and other food venues; (vi) prioritizing strategies to reduce racial and ethnic disparities, including social determinants of health..."
In a section entitled, “Community-Based Prevention Health Activities," the bill calls on grant recipients to measure weight loss, physical activity, smoking and other activities of people in the neighborhood.
"In carrying out subparagraph (A), the eligible entity shall, with respect to residents in the community, measure--
"(i) decreases in weight;
"(ii) increases in proper nutrition;
"(iii) increases in physical activity;
"(iv) decreases in tobacco use prevalence;
"(v) other factors using community-specific data from the Behavioral Risk Surveillance Survey; and
"(vi) other factors as determined by the Secretary [at HHS].”
The proposed law further says that the CDC director “shall provide appropriate feedback and technical assistance to grantees to establish community makeover plans.”
The proposed law does not say, however, exactly how or with what authority a grant recipient would go around measuring weight loss of community residents, or their use of “proper nutrition” or whether they had increased their physical activity, among other mandates in the bill.
Further, the Kennedy health care bill does not say which “national network of community-based organizations” is eligible to participate. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) said that it is possible that the controversial group ACORN could qualify for the available grants.
“I don’t believe so, but they could be,” Dodd told CNSNews.com, in an earlier interview. “I just don’t want to say categorically it’s the case.”
“I’m not saying yes or no, I just don’t know. I don’t think it’s a blanket thing that anyone applies necessarily,” he said. “There would have to be criteria by which an organization qualifies to receive those grants.”
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is a national network of community-based organizations. It has been scrutinized in recent years over allegations of voter registration fraud. In Nevada, criminal charges were filed against the group in May that said ACORN illegally paid for the registration of voters before the 2008 election. ACORN has denied the allegations.
ACORN has also been criticized because of its partnership agreement with the U.S. Census Bureau to help in the 2010 Census count.
Devon Herrick, a senior fellow at the conservative National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), in an e-mail to CNSNews.com, speculated that grants for “Creating Healthier Communities” could be misused by organizations that do not promote healthy living.
“I'm only speculating, because the bill does not make it clear,” Herrick said. “You will have to ask the Senate HELP Committee staff for a definitive answer. [But] my concern is the grants would be misused to reward political organizations whose mission has never been to promote healthier lifestyles.”
Herrick said he doubts that efforts by community-based organizations will result in healthier neighborhoods, adding that he expects entities such as schools and non-profits to use the grants if the Senate provision is included in the final bill.
“I'm not convinced community-based initiatives will result in healthier communities,” he said.
“But if provisions for healthy community grants ultimately pass, I would like to think the funds would be used by schools [to create new after-school programs] and by non-profits, such as YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etcetera,” Herrick said, “and for actual programs that encourage physical activity and teach healthy living.”
The NCPA’s senior fellow’s comments were in response to CNSNews.com’s inquiry to provide an interpretation of the “community transformation grants provision” and whether organizations like ACORN would benefit. He was also asked to provide examples of which organizations would qualify.
“My hope is that the funds would go to organizations who have been promoting healthy lifestyles all along,” Herrick told CNSNews.com.
Michael W. Chapman contributed to this report.
Keep plugging Dogstar
But me thinks you are banging your head against Yael's brick wall.....You know .....the soundproof wall that he was behind when his comparative religion class discussed famous religious quotes like "the truth shall set you free".
In Yael's ivory tower, editorial board world "healthcare reform" and "public option" are exclusive synonymous terms for one another. To challenge that imaginary fact means that you are either "ignorant" or a victim of a "misleading campaign".....or JUST MAYBE, you read the bills and he didn't
It took him 2+ days to find a poll he could reference that favored his position on any current trends in the public opinion/health care marketplace......still he did not link to it.
Yael's not interested in finding out what the bills really say.
He's far more interested in deflecting the publics attention to a faux issue.....end of life counseling......which really has no place in the "health care" discussion and was appropriately removed from the senate bill. (A living will is a legal document that requires somewhere between very, very little and no physician input.)
If he can bring a derisive Palin comment into the post he thinks he gains gravitas.
He's right though..... it's really sad.
Read the bill
I do not support health care reform as proposed in HR3200, nor am I ignorant. Nobody has tried to persuade me to be against this bill-- I've simply read it for myself. Yes, our health care system needs to be improved, and it can be. But that does not mean that Americans should allow the government more control over their lives. This bill gives unprecedented powers to the executive branch to dictate what kinds of care we can receive:
Section 123 of HR3200 establishes the Health Benefits Advisory Committee. This committee, appointed by the president has the following duties:
“The Health Benefits Advisory Committee shall recommend to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (in this subtitle referred to as the ‘‘Secretary’’) benefit standards (as defined in paragraph (4)), and periodic updates to such standards.”
Benefit standards are defined in subparagraph (4) as:
“…the term ‘‘benefit standards’’ means standards respecting— (A) the essential benefits package described in section 122, including categories of covered treatments, items and services within benefit classes, and cost-sharing”
This is pretty much carte blanche when it comes to deciding who gets what kinds of care and frankly, I don't trust the president to decide whether I get the blue pill or the red one.

Name-calling
Let's see. We're ignorant. We're un-American. We're astroturf. We're a mob. We are absurd. Now we are liars.
There is nothing sinister in asking questions and seeking answers to complex problems. There is nothing wrong with asking tough questions in order to seek the truth.
not directed at people with genuine questions
There is nothing sinister in asking questions and seeking answers to complex problems. There is nothing wrong with asking tough questions in order to seek the truth.
There is nothing sinister in asking questions, of course, but implying that a clause about end of life counseling is going to be used to kill off the elderly is a different matter. I don't think the article was talking about people with genuine questions so much as those trying to derail a civil debate using shock tactics.
In this issue, "Death
In this issue, "Death Panels", conservatives are just following your proposals to the logical conclusion along the "Slipery Slope" that you liberals invoke so often when addressing issues you don't like.
I love the Drudge headline "Own It"
along side a picture of Obama, Reid & Pelosi.
.
They have the numbers, and they can "own it", but will they have the gonads?
The ones who are uninformed
The people who are uninformed and telling lies are members of the media, members of Congress, the President, and others in the Obama Administration who have obviously not read the bill. Maybe the Star should assign an intern to read the bill, then they would know what is and is not in there.
I've posted both of these before, but of course it got deleted. (I'm making a backup this time)
HR 3200 has no language that prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortion on demand as a method of birth control. Democrats in the House and Senate have refused all ammendments that would insert language that would restrict coverage for abortions in any way. What the bill does not specify as being restricted will be interpreted as being allowed.
The language in HR 3200 concerning 'end of life' counseling does not specify that it is voluntary, or that the paitient must be the one to initiate the consultation request. As a matter of fact the language in HR 3200 provides for financial incentives for physicians to initiate the consultation. There is also no provision for allowing the paitient to have a paitient advocate present, or preventing anyone other then the paitient, paitient advocate, and physician present. There is also no provision on the timing of the consultation. That leaves this open to huge abuses such as a govt. bureaucrat threatening and bullying a paitient into refusing an expensive treatment or procedure even if their condition is 100% curable.
Don't think that could happen? Look at the records, and writings of some of Obama's advisors, specifically Ezekiel Emmanuel and John Holdren.
Lets see now.....
According to Yael Americans were "brilliant" when they elected "the One". But now they became increasinly stupid since they aren't buying his health care fol de rol...... Man, someone must have sprinkled "stupid dust" all over the country because now most Americans are ignorant.
Yael, seriously, losen the foil hat just a tad.....
lies are you kidding me ? BHO has no clue what he's doing .
"Ignorant" are you kidding me this idiot president does not even have a plan . If he had a brain he would be dangerous , look we all know you work for a socialist newpaper but give us a break .
This really shouldn't be
This really shouldn't be news to anyone following the whole debacle. Most of the main complaints about Obama's plan are nothing more than straw men arguments with little basis in reality. The whole "death panels" ordeal is a perfect example of this.
Campaign of lies damages health care plan
Do you want competition and reduced costs then have all three, Health Insurance Exchanges, Co-op's and the Public Option, along with Existing Private Health Care Plans.
Private Health Care Plans can compete with Public Option and others if you make the difference in plan cost tax deductible which ever is high for same coverage.
Bipartisan? Yes,but we can't afford to do nothing! Inflation historically is about 3.5% average which doubles cost of living every 12 yrs. Health Care costs have been increasing even faster.
Nothing....
...like calling your audience 'ignorant'.
You know there was a way to sell this plan--too bad the media had to be involved.
Information helps in making the best decisions
Although Americans are better educated than ever before you seem to be saying they are easily manipulated by those with whom you disagree and you can't get your message to them. That seems difficult to believe. Both sides of the health debate are making their cases and offering questionable "facts" and views. I am sure Americans are able to listen to the information provided by both sides and come to the best decision on health care. Judging from the polls your views are losing and that seems to be the source of your discontent. If the polls showed your views enjoying public support you would be content to allow those with whom you disagree to rant and rave without comment.
YT, What About...
the lies that "savings" will pay for the big 0's plan? Oh, that's right, he has yet to put forward "his plan", right?
Until you libs agree to meaningful tort reform and deny state mandates, you are merely installing socialized medicine on our entire healthcare system IMO... The campaign of lies is yours not admitting to this...
"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money,"
