Raytown is the largest area city that has refused to approve a smoke-free ordinance for public places. Fortunately, Raytown has the potential to shed the image that comes with such a backward approach to a key health issue.
A citizens committee is holding hearings on potential smoke-free measures and is on pace to send a proposal to the Board of Aldermen by summer’s end.
To best protect the health of its citizens, Raytown should pass an ordinance that follows the examples set by a host of area cities in recent years.
All prohibit smoking in public places, including inside restaurants and most bars.
Raytown should join the list of cities with reasonable smoking restrictions, which help create a level playing field for all businesses.

Let business owners decide.
I have written to both of my aldermen asking them to vote against the No Smoking Ordinance. I do not smoke and dislike the smell. You will never find me sitting on a barstool smoking and drinkng. However, I dislke government regulation of personal behaviour even more. Those businesses which choose to ban smoking should make that decision without government interference Premier Recreation, for instance, has chosen to ban smoking but the proprieters did it on their own. Their action is greatly appreciated by those of us who bowl there.
Absolutely it does
It's a strong, sensible public health and workplace safety measure.
Time to close the casino loophole here in KC while we're at it.
No it does not
Raytown needs to remain the island of sanity in a sea of insantiy.
