Welcome to the Midwest Voices blog, a community forum created to foster discussion on issues that matter to our region, nation and the world. We hope it will become a gathering place of thoughtful debate, a spot to share ideas and push projects. The blogosphere is full of opinion options, but we hope to fill a niche by offering conversation among neighbors in this region who like to debate the issues of the day.

To begin, take a look at the current offerings. Daily editorials and opinions from The Star and from an array of other regional newspapers will be updated regularly on the right side of the blog homepage.

In the center, the editorial board, Midwest Voices contributors and Editorial Board Reader Advisory Panel members will post commentary that we hope will prompt a conversation with readers. By replying, you help all of us better understand your position and, perhaps, sway others to your point of view. Even just sharing facts from your own knowledge can help others.

On the lefthand column, check out the feature "Think about this," a spot created to highlight worthwhile commentary from other publications and we welcome your responses.

Each week, the editorial board typically schedules several meetings with guests _ and they will be listed on the lefthand column under the headline: “Look Who's Coming.” Questions from the community may be posted in advance for the guests.

At the top, we have a topics list that allows viewers to search by subject and, over time, we'll have an archive.

This is a just a beginning. Later we hope to add video commentary from readers.

For now, join the discussions and send us ideas for future additions. As with all blogs, we request civil conversations, commentary on ideas, not personal attacks.

Spread the word and add us to your "favorites." This blog allows us to expand the Opinion page offerings and, as always, we welcome your contributions.

—Miriam Pepper, editorial page editor.

Rules of Civic Engagement

Comments are posted immediately and will not be edited. But please use good taste and courtesy. Absolutely no name-calling of politicians, government officials, opinion writers or others posting comments — it's unimaginative and besides, you can do better just making your point clearly and quickly.

When presenting factual information, take care that it is accurate and cite and/or link to sources where appropriate. This includes your representation of yourself: Absolutely no spoofing; presenting yourself as another person is grounds to delete your account. Although we are not responsible for the content of the comments, we reserve the right to remove comments that are threatening, libelous, obscene or otherwise objectionable. To emphasize, this means no profanity or vulgarity, racially or sexually offensive speech — even if you’ve substituted part of the words with symbols.
