A couple of weeks ago, Nevada Senator John Ensign said the fact that he was stumping around Iowa did not indicate that he was planning a presidential run.
Today, Ensign released a statement owning up to an extramarital affair with a campaign staffer.
Yep. Sounds like he's planning to run.
Get the baggage out in the open early, spend a few months doing penitence, then full speed ahead in campaign mode.
Ensign, a leading "family-values" conservative, was adamant about demanding Idaho Sen. Larry Craig's resignation after the infamous incident in the airport bathroom. But he'll probably cut himself some slack. This sounds, after all, like more of your run-of-the-mill indiscretion. Hey, it didn't stop Bill Clinton from getting to the White House.

Ensign resigns GOP leadership post
As he should have - if you're wearing the mantle he wore, then you have to pay the price. As far as I'm concerned (and I'm a non-religious conservative), he can damn well resign from the Senate, too, but then most of them probably have done worse and really don't care - lol.
If you're going to lie to your wife and indirectly your children, and expose them to this, then why would I trust YOU to represent MY interests?

"Last year I had an affair. I violated the vows of my marriage," Ensign said. "It is the worst thing I have ever done in my life. If there was ever anything in my life that I could take back, this would be it."
Ensign has been a rising star among conservatives, speaking out against President Barack Obama's stimulus package, statehood for the District of Columbia and union-organizing legislation and in favor of gun owners' rights. Ensign has been a member of the men's ministry the Promise Keepers, a Christian ministry.
He had been highly critical of former Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, who served in Congress for a quarter-century when he was arrested in an airport bathroom sex sting. Ensign stopped short of urging him to resign but suggested strongly that he should.
"I wouldn't put myself hopefully in that kind of position, but if I was in a position like that, that's what I would do," Ensign said. "He's going to have to answer that for himself." In the end, Craig served out his term.

Grinreaper on Target Too: Infidelity Not Hypocrisy
Grin: You are correct, I suspect. A large number of voters may tolerate infidelity in a Presidential candidate, but they are unlikely to accept hypocrisy. Especially, in the case of those with their hands in the "cookie-jar" as you eloquently expressed it.
Infidelity Among the “Holier-than-Thou”
From a political standpoint, not all infidelities are created equal.
Bill Clinton got away with it (if you don’t count the impeachment thing and a largely failed second term) because we all knew he was a hound dog from the get-go. He didn’t pretend to be a saint, nor preach to others that they should be. Clinton was also enormously aided by the fact that a lot of people didn’t like Hillary. To some, it made his infidelity understandable.
John Edwards was a little more “holier-than-thou” and has a wife more people like. He’s toast, politically.
Most Republicans have the “holier-than-thou” problem. Most have preached to the choir about morality, family values and patriotism. When they get caught with their hand in one of these cookie jars they are especially vulnerable. This is not much of a problem for a Representative, because districts have been gerrymandered to virtually guaranty districts for both parties. It is more problematic for Senators and Presidential Candidates. For some it is the breaking of religious vows; but for most it is the hypocrisy.
If Ensign is a good enough candidate, if we don’t like his wife much and if he switches from “family values” to “forgiveness”, he may be alright. Tough trifecta, though.
“Get Yer Fake Guccis While Their Hot”
Gucci is probably the most copied label in the world. The quality of the product is not copied; mind you, just the label. These are ordinarily cheap knock-offs that can become unglued on a humid day.

I thought Barb was making the very point that others have done this. I’m a little surprised that affairs can be viewed as run-of-the-mill; but I guess that’s where we are. (Wasn’t the old joke that the only way a Senator could get in trouble in a sex scandal is if he did it with a live boy or a dead woman?).
My recollection is that Clinton suffered some inconvenience for his transgressions and I don’t believe well be seeing Edwards run again. I am glad to see that Grinch has become more tolerant of their peccadilloes.
Nope - I'll wait for the truth to emerge on Ensign
According to the following story, possible blackmail was involved and his affair occurred months after Ensign separated from his wife.
HOWEVER, the fact remains that Ensign had an affair with a married woman, and that alone means his honesty is legitimately called into question, as well as his judgment. We can already see THOSE don't make a bean's worth of difference as far as Democrats are concerned with regards to presidents (or for that matter, MOST presidents), but at least we maintain the fiction of it, so I say Ensign is dead with regards to succeeding the Messiah.
My first post was simply pointing out Barb's continuing liberal bias, so I wanted to make sure the story was more 'fair and balanced' than she would bother to show by including prominent Democrats. The liberals pounce with glee on people with morals who don't live up to them but give a pass to those who had no morals to begin with.

Speaking of useless, I wonder what John Edwards is up to these days after he tried to crawl back into politics and got the door slammed shut in his face. Remember John, Barb? That's the former Democrat presidential hopeful who cheated on his cancer-stricken wife with Rielle Hunter after having commented in the past that it was terrible for married men to cheat and reflected poorly on a candidate's ability to be president. He also probably fathered Rielle's baby, though in an Obama-like effort at transparency, Rielle has refused a DNA test to establish the paternity.
I'm sorry, I thought at this point we already know the politicians are screwing US, so who cares who they actually do? I mean, Hillary was married to a serial adulterer who enjoyed good oral sex in the Oval office from a young intern, and we were lectured to by Democrats that it was perfectly fine, why should anyone care? So why should you care about the private affairs of Ensign? Are you saying that it's impossible to hold a Democrat accountable simply because we already know they have no moral standard to violate anyway???
I find it courageous that Ensign would admit to the affair, rather than sneak around and lie about it like Edwards did after he got caught. Man, he's got my vote!!!
