The U.S. Supreme Court has placed the deeply flawed the "don't ask-don't tell" policy in the hands of the military and the president.

The high court today refused to hear an appeal by former Army Capt. James Pietrangelo II, who was dismissed under the policy that allows gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces, as long as their sexual identity remains under wraps.

The court's refusal to get involved places the hot potato on the plate of President Barack Obama. He said during his campaign he supports the eventual repeal of the policy, but hasn't been in any hurry to do something about it.

I don't see why not. Don't ask-don't tell was a strange compromise that never made sense to begin with. But it's become increasingly ridiculous as qualified servicemen and women are discharged for a reason that has nothing to do with their service or conduct.
