You can admire Miss California Carrie Prejean even if you don't agree with her view on gay marriage.
Rather than come across as a scripted, near-airhead contestant on the Miss USA contest (and we've sure seen our share of beauty pageant participants fitting that description), Prejean spoke her mind on Sunday.
Asked her views on gay marriage, she responded:
We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised.
Her response drew criticism later from judge and gay blogger Perez Hilton. He caller her dumb and even worse.
But again, it was refreshing to see someone not give the politically correct answer.
Predictably, conservatives and some Republican politicians are embracing Prejean because of her comments. That's fine, too, because she's getting a positive reaction for speaking her mind.
Plus, despite irritating some people in the Miss USA crowd, Prejean finished as first runnerup.
She might have won the competition if she'd given a more nuanced answer to the question on gay marriage. But she apparently wasn't raised that way.
Good for Carrie Prejean.

When are we going to rid our country of this gentry pageant crap? Miss California doesn't really count as being one of the great opinion makers of our time.
Cheers for Miss California Carrie Prejean
Miss California could have answered Hilton's question this way "No, I do not think that every state should follow suit because I believe that a traditional marriage is between a man and a woman. However, I am in no position to decide if every state should follow suit or not. As a future Miss USA, it is my job not to be a politician but to be someone who represents and inspires the women and the troops, and I think it's great that the states get to decide for themselves." There! Hilton would have given her a higher score than 0.
Miwa - you are naive
Perez Hilton would not take anything less than an answer that validated his agenda. That's how those people are. They like to pretend that they are liberal in allowing all opinions, but in the case of gay marriage, it's their way or the highway. Screw Perez Hilton and the slut he road in on.

Thank you for your courteous response. I understand the concerns for couples, gay and straight, to have legal protection of their assets. My premise is that these protections (that address the issues of civil rights and discrimination) are available without redefining the inherent definition of "marriage" - the bond between a Man and a Woman. No other relationship fits this definition. If you are religious or not, the definition is solid. Impermeable. Impenetrable. Unchangeable.
Apples and Oranges
"Marriage is a union of one man and one woman in an enduring bond. This is consistent with biology and natural law, and should be obvious to all, no matter what their religion, or even if they have no religion at all. It is a mutual personal gift between a man and a woman that serves the individual couple in many ways, allowing them to grow in love and, through that love, to bring forth children."
The person who demeaned this relationship and referred to a heterosexual married couple as "breeders" is incredibly warped.
A stable family structure, mom, dad, and their children, is the ultimate safeguard so that civil society can exist and flourish. Organized communities, society, has long observed its duty to foster and respect marriage between a man and a woman. The fact that fewer children are being born should be a cause for alarm for the future of the human race, not celebration.
Just because Joe Smith and John Jones have a committed relationship is not a reason for the state to confer upon that relationship the status of "marriage". The relationship does not fit the definition. It is a homosexual relationship. It is not, nor ever could be, a "marriage".
Upholding the marriage covenant between a man and woman is NOT unjust discrimination against homosexual persons. The percieved benefits of "marriage" are open to all already such as joint ownership of homes, durable power of attorney, wills and estate plans. Legal partnerships, civil unions, are what they are. "Marriage" can not be "re-defined" because it is what it is. You can't call an orange an apple and pretend that it is an apple. It will always be an orange.

Organized communities, society, has long observed its duty to foster and respect marriage between a man and a woman. The fact that fewer children are being born should be a cause for alarm for the future of the human race, not celebration.
So, in order to promote the existence and growth of a civil society, shouldn't we turn our focus more on outlawing divorce than preventing more people from getting married? Expanding the legal (not religious) definition of marriage to include a minority group doesn't sound like the biggest threat to the fabric of civil society. To me, having two fathers or mothers in a stable unit is far less disruptive to a child's development than having parents leaving and new parent figures entering their lives. And, before you start looking up to Octomom as inspiration for saving the human race, understand that population grows exponentially, so even if it's a slowER growth rate, I doubt in your lifetime, we'll have to worry about the humans going extinct. As a final thought, I'd just like to point out that in my mind, discrimination of any form should never be seen as "NOT unjust". If we got rid of all prejudices and actually acknowledge and respect people with different viewpoints, perhaps we would all find we have a lot to learn from each other. Life's too short to discriminate.
Homosexual couples are not immune to break-ups

On the first point, break-ups are unfortunate, traumatic, and emotionally devastating. That is not a valid reason to redefine marriage. On your second point, discrimination is wrong and should not be tolerated. Laws are written to prevent discrimination. Civil rights of homosexuals absolutely hould be protected. The social, biological, intrinsic, inviolable construct of "marriage", absolutely, should also be protected. Marriage is not a civil right like equal pay for equal work. Sharing property, ensuring access to health information, rights of succession...those are civil arrangements that our government can and should ensure. p.s. artificial insemination (Octomom) is not relevant.
Hilton, Trump and the Miss USA organization all stink!!!
Prerez Hilton represent all that is vile and vulgar in todays society. Donald Trump and the Miss USA organization just plain stink!!!!
To quote Carrie Prejean's Grandmother:
"I don't know why that gay guy Perez was even judging a contest with a bunch of girls. That doesn't make any sense. He should be judging a Chippendale's contest."
She is truly and Grand Lady and my Hero.
Hilton admitted that Miss California was way ahead before his question and Trump had this to say:
Trump added that Prejean’s question was “a bit unlucky,” arguing that no matter how she answered the question “she was going to get killed.”
If you believe them then Miss California was force out because of here morals and religious beliefs. Isn't there some legal protect from this type of discrimination?????

I understand homosexual relationships are not immune to breakups. My point was that while I agreed with your initial argument that a strong family unit is highly important to civil society, I disagreed on what necessarily defined the "strong", modern day, family unit. With divorce rates going through the roof, as a society, perhaps we should be doing as much as we can to provide a civil framework for all stable relationships, whether they are straight or gay. The general perception has been that gay relationships are less stable than straight relationships, and yet we're not willing to recognize the gay relationships that are stable. Many gay couples have been together for decades, so will allowing them to now file a joint tax form really have any impact on your or my marriage? In my opinion, allowing or disallowing gay civil marriages will neither weaken nor bolster straight marriages in any way. Perhaps you can offer your views on this, but I struggle to understand any real or perceived impact of this issue to the general straight community. As for "the social, biological, intrinsic, inviolable construct of 'marriage'," I'm not quite sure what that means, but as I mentioned in my response to Twas, I believe that civil marriage is different from religious marriage, and I would argue that we can change one without changing the other. As for the Octomom comment, I apologize. I wasn't clear on your concern of fewer babies being born and was attempting to add humor to my response.
