U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Kansas is a feisty and ardent conservative. But he said something Tuesday that might irritate Rush Limbaugh's ditto-head followers.

Tiahrt was asked by a Kansas City Star Editorial Board member whether Limbaugh was now the de facto leader of the GOP.

"No, no, he's just an entertainer," Tiahrt said.

Whoops.

Remember Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele? He got in trouble earlier this year for saying, "Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh's whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it is incendiary. Yes, it is ugly."

Steele quickly apologized after being ripped by Limbaugh.

"There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership," Steele meekly said.

And don't forget Phil Gingrey, a Georgia Republican, who also had to apologize for comments that made it appear he was criticizing Limbaugh.

Tiahrt better be careful. He's running to replace fellow Republican Sam Brownback as one of Kansas' two senators in 2010.

And one of his GOP challengers will be Jerry Moran, another member of Congress from Kansas.
