Raytown voters did it on Tuesday.

They defied difficult economic times -- and once again stomped on the unfair stereotype of Raytown as a backward city.

The voters approved a half-cent sales tax for public safety. It will raise $1.1 million a year.

In recent years Raytown also has endorsed new sales taxes for better roads and parks.

Now Mayor David Bower and other city officials must use the new sales-tax revenue as they promised voters.

That especially means hiring new police officers and a criminal analyst to help Raytown battle crime.
