New York Post cartoon
By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist
Al Sharpton and other civil rights activists think a New York Post cartoon compares President Barack Obama to a chimpanzee and is thus racist.
I don't agree. It appears instead to be a cartoon that tries to make fun of Congress' much-maligned stimulus bill -- and falls completely flat.
In other words, I buy the explanation that Post editors have offered for the cartoon by Sean Delonas:
The dead chimpanzee in the cartoon didn't represent Obama but a famous chimp that was shot dead a few days ago after it attacked its owner and others in Stamford, Conn.
Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy."
It's easy to link the cartoon to an attack on Obama, considering he's thought by many Americans to be the main backer of the stimulus bill.
But in the end I don't believe a cartoonist and his editors would be so ignorant as to represent Obama with a chimp, given its obvious racist connotations.
Of course, that explanation isn't going to satisfy many civil rights activists who are sensitive to how Obama is portrayed in the national media.

We disagree however, in the "gut" "muhabbet interpretation of the cartoon. Coming the day after cops killed the chimp in a mIRC highly publicised Connecticut shooting would suggest that seeing Obama killed by Chat those cops is a greater problem with the viewer's lens than with the cartoon. If you saw racism first it just might be your conscience agreeing with your heart....."I will not make that mistake again
Al Sharpton has no desire to
Al Sharpton has no desire to see the races get along. He would then be deemed irrelevent and being irrelevent is Sharpton's worst nightmare.
But it wasn't about Obama
The chimp that was shot dead was supposed to be George Bush, who was widely ridiculed as "The Chimp." The stimulus referred to is the ridiculous banking bailout bill, signed by Bush. And the cartoon appeared on the Jon Stewart Show. Feel better about jokes about dead Presidents now?
Yael, Your post is clear
Yael,
Your post is clear proof of the old adage, Opinions are like A-holes, everybody has one and most of them stink.
Nukman and I agree 100%

Nukman, you perceive that as being an opinion that stinks, and I agree entirely. You and I clearly believe that the cartoonist and his editors CAN be that ignorant, and that the explanation RIGHTFULLY shouldn't satisfy civil rights activists.
What a guy.
Obama
Obama didn't write the bill. A Nancy Pelosi Congress did. I think the cartoon is right on track and very funny. When you see everything as having racial intent you have no credibility when something is actually racially offensive. I think Al Sharpton can be very funny but a national moral compass he is not.
You're right, Eurasmus
I didn't take it as having any sly, slant reference to Obama. I assumed immediately that the reference was to George Bush, who actually does look like a chimp, and who was responsible for the banking bailout bill. I think it's very fair and balanced of the owner, Rupert Murdoch, to print cartoons mocking Republican presidents.
Sorry, people, this is for Chazzy again
I do remember one time, a sweet belle, with a compound first name, from my dorm floor made the statement "I caain't help it that I'm a racist; I was raised that way." I challenged her. "Now that's not true, Marygrace, we all can change. . . " Six people jumped ME, told me to lay off of her. That she was just "telling the truth." I was not a prominent jock. I was just the girl with the yankee accent who didn't come from "family" (south translation: old money).
Hi, Chazzy
Let's hope I'm making up some now for my lack of courage in the past. As I write now I try to keep a mission statement in the back of my head -- tell a truth; advance compassion. I know that the "truths" that I see are not universally recognized as such, but if I keep a firm grasp on the second part of that mission, then no one should get hurt.
This is not racist
Basically saying that Pelosi - who oversaw the Stimulus bill will never have a chance again - basically because of the nutty monkey who was given Xanax by its owner and went crazy and was shot. So Pelosi is the monkey.
Al Sharpton is weird
It is obviously racist, Yael.
Could not disagree more. The internet has been abuzz for weeks with depictions of our president as a chimp, and the 'cartoon' in question makes little sense unless it's viewed in the context of those depictions. It's dispicable, but frankly what I expect from Rupert's gang.
Twas . . .
I'm knowledgeable of the stimulus bill and the reporting on it, which frequently referred to it as "Obama's stimulus plan," especially when he was trying to sell it to the Republicans. It's not so far fetched to make the connection between the monkey and Obama. My opinion, respectfully submitted.
It seems there are a lot of people here who just get under one another's skin, and you can't stop yourselves from bickering. I don't know whether you guys are having fun anymore or not. I think maybe you used to, but the freshness is wearing off.
Okay to get back on topic?
Chazzy, I wish that racism had died in the 50s. I saw the cartoon and thought racism immediately, and I think this is because I went to undergrad and lived my early 20s in the deep south, which was a cultural shock after being reared in the midwest. I can't say I was a brave crusader back then (20-cough years ago -- let's not get into my age), so I was privy to several tasteless jokes and casual references that equated black people with monkeys, which I left unchallenged. It was clear that in certain circles in the south, that metaphorical assumption, black = monkey, was entrenched and even part of certain groups' social glue. And I'm not talking about only underclass and powerless people. I'm willing to bet that in 20-some years that assumption isn't dead entirely.
Bad cartooning. Bad editorial judgement for a national market.
I am surprised, Debra
Bad cartooning. Bad editorial judgement for a national market.
Debra..... We agree that it was bad cartooning and less than thoughtful editing that allowed the Post's unfortunate publishing.
I too left the midwest (Chicago) to metriculate to an SEC school (albeit 20 years before you) and, as one who was conscientous in fighting the age old prejudices, which were all pervasive, I find your willingness to allow those racist stereotypes to go unchallenged both disappointing and surprising. I admit, I have much greater respect for you than that lack of judgement warrants or deserves.
While I too witnessed an unbelievable abundance of ignorance, as a prominent "jock" I believed I was obligated to speak out and be a lightening rod for change on the campus......it remains a proud action in my life. Many of those that I helped change remain friends today, some 40 years later
We disagree however, in the "gut" interpretation of the cartoon. Coming the day after cops killed the chimp in a highly publicised Connecticut shooting would suggest that seeing Obama killed by those cops is a greater problem with the viewer's lens than with the cartoon. If you saw racism first it just might be your conscience agreeing with your heart....."I will not make that mistake again"
DebraSY
That all assumes that the editor would equate the monkey with Obama - and he blew the call. Most likely, the editor saw the cartoon and equated the monkey with Congress (as most people knowledgeable with the stimulus bill would). So if the editor assumed the readers were uninformed, he should have killed the cartoon. Maybe he miscalculated the intelligence of his readers.
And on that same subject
What party controlled Congress during Clinton's term when the so-called budget surplus happened?
what is more racist...a
what is more racist...a cartoon with a monkey that has been shot or the fact that liberals see a monkey and think our black president?
Sometimes I find it funny how those who look for race in everything do not realize they are the racist ones.
If you see a cartoon of a monkey and think a black man...you are a sad individual.
If the wording had been "guess we need a new president" or the monkey had been wearing even a suit I could maybe see it...but seeing the black president in a monkey is just sick
Bamboo Time to Evolve or be
Bamboo
Time to Evolve or be left behind.
What’s left of the Republican Party is still having trouble accepting their election loss. This is evident in this blatantly racist cartoon. However, what is most offensive about the carton has less to do the monkey and more to do with seeing two American police officers shooting and killing what is implied to be our President. If such a cartoon depicted "President" Bush being shot and killed, chances are the cartoonist would have ended up in Guantanamo Bay, held indefinitely as a possible terror suspect for threatening the Presidents life!
Fortunately, the radical right has become extremely transparent with their war mongering, war profiteering, torture tactics, elitism, racism and blatant disregard for the environment and human life. As a result, many sensible American people who used to be aligned with the Republican Party are no longer.
For those of you who are still not ready to evolve with the rest of America, allow me to share with you the same words that you shared with me during 8 painful years of the Bush administration...If you don’t like it, you are free to leave...In fact, I hear that the US has put a lot of money into rebuilding Iraq, perhaps you should go there. I’m sure you would be welcomed with open ‘arms’.
Bambooeco
The cartOOn depicted two police officers shooting a Chimp (remember the news a couple of days ago), and when you say implied, it is YOU looking for ghosts. The porkulous bill was written by congress - so the implication is totally YOURS to fit your politics!
You Libs Are Hilarious
Only you, who live on victimhood, with the resulting jobs to rid our nation of it, see the racist angle in this. Keep living in the 50's libs.
what's hilarious
is KCgrunt's seeming delusion that what he writes makes sense to anyone but himself.
Heard That Your Boy's Poll Numbers Dropped Again Interface...
Oh, I bet that will be construed as RACIST by you libs too... You are much too predictable...
20 months until sanity returns...
That's only if you listen to Fox News, KCGrunt
And only if you worry about what Republicans think, which I don't. Obama's ratings are up among Democrats, and frankly if I were a Republican Obama would have me shaking in my boots, too. MIGOD! It looks like he's going to SUCCEED!
Yours for the day that "Republican" becomes the answer to a trivia question ("who had all the money and still blew it?")
what
are you babbling about? Last I looked, Mickey Rourke is still the odds-on favorite.
Favorite for What?
the big 0 has already got "most unqualified for office" locked-up.
He also is aiming to have a lock on who created most U.S. debt. Yep, "change we can believe it".
No, that would be George Bush
Gentleman's-C scholar, convicted criminal, and deserter. And as for the U.S. debt, that would still be Ronald Reagan, tripling the debt in eight short years.
Edith
Please tell me what party controlled Congress during Reagan's terms. And while you are at it, which branch of government approves the budget?
Not Fair Twas...
There you go again trying to deal in FACTS with IT. That's not fair and you know it!!!!
And the big 0's Grades???
Oh, I forgot, undergrad grades "not released".
STFW?
He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. Yeah, THAT Harvard. Prolly affirmative action or something. Did YOU go to Harvard? I didn't go to Harvard. Did YOU graduate top of your class ANYWHERE? I didn't graduate top of my class anywhere.
Find a real issue, kcgrunt.
You Brought-up Grades IT, not Me...
By the way, what does prolly mean oh great inhabitant of the ivory tower?
KCgrh
Prolly = probably, in chat mode.
thanks Twas...
.
At it again?
So the great Reagan economic recovery was due to the fact that the Democrats controlled Congress during most of his administration?
That's it, Edith
Not. The Great Communicator was able to move his agenda through Congress by tapping the American people, however the majority in Congress still had a choice between politics and the will of the people. Clinton was slightly successful in that endeavor, but only slightly. So bottom line: It was Reagan's great economy, and when Clinton was pres, it was the majority party in Congress' balanced budget. Got that? Let me know if I can straighten you out on other stuff. Thanks for your support!
I got it.
Republican Presidents are responsible for everything good that happens. Democratic Presidents are responsible for everything else, including whatever bad happens during a Republican Administration. Seems fair to me.
You must be kidding,...or just Bamboozled
..... blatantly racist cartoon.
A) It is racist only to those who remain lost in the 50's ...or have a singular perversity.
B) Conn police shot and killed a chimp on Monday in a lady's home. What you inferred was not that which was implied. I guess you are still living in a bamboo hut.....or you would not have missed that.
C) Or the 2 movies released in the last 2 years about Bush, one of which was tastelessly about his assassination.
So I Guess Eric Holder Was Right
It's troubling that of all the comments, there is only one who has actually addressed the racial issue of blacks being referred to as monkeys and apes.
It proves the cowardice that is so prevalent in our nation. Where this discussion should be pointed toward why this is such a racial issue, the responses have largely been to discredit the plaintiffs and play down the incident.
We're still not dealing with the 800lb gorilla(no pun intended) in the room.
Monkeys and Pork and Papers and Con's
This ridiculous indignation over a cartoon is reminiscent of Muslim crazies and their allah-god fetishes. Who cares what the Post was doing? Does anyone really think that a tax-dodging, life-long slimeball like Shapton or his street Mafia creeps really care? The NY Times and their allies play us for such suckers. Oh when will they finally go bankrupt?! At any rate, the Post is getting great coverage, and even I, a non-newspaper person, will be getting my own copy within the next two hours.
Who gets upset about a stupid cartoon?
Those who live their lives and think their thoughts in a myopic vacuum of single issue intolerance.
A couple of years ago the islamic community went bonkers over a few Danish cartoons portraying Allah unfavorably. Now the racial sluts like Sharpton, Jackson and the thankfully silenced Diuguid, would find a racial theme where none exists.....in spite of the obviously news-timely portrayal of a chimp shot by the cops.
It would be "nice" if those with the power to publish exercised a greater sensitivity to the POTENTIAL for mis-interpretation of presentations of all that they print. Still, it is up to each viewer/reader to utilize those same sensitivities and an open minded absorption of facts and issues when interpreting such presentations.
Yael is correct ...it is neither racist nor very good cartooning.....if it were really good cartooning there would be less ambiguity in interpretation.
Cool the fires of Anger and Allow God to continue Interceeding
Both emotional responses have validity: 1. All GOP supporters aren't racist (Most simply don't know All the facts or they would not support the continuation of the last 8 years way of thinking) and 2. People need to understand what "Innuendo" means (Including Yael)to get the meaning of this indirect attack on Obama. Lastly, A Metamorphosis or (revolution of thinking, MLK) is happening in our country and people Are trying to both Change and Accept the Changes that are occurring both in our minds and hearts about the way we view each other and That is God interceeding!. We Must pray that the principalities of evil described in the bible that rule this earth don't prevent us and Obama both to live thru these subliminal (mental) invitations introduced to the Weak, Ignorant and hateful amoung us!. Accepting change comes from the love of God and a Genuine examination of oneself to identify what needs to be Changed within Each of us!.
Whether or not the cartoon was intended for Obama
I find it a bit ironic that George Bush can be referred to by the left as everything from the anti Christ to coincidentally a chimp and the left never had an issue. In all likely hood, they were the ones saying it.
The chimp characterization after all was based on appearance in his case as well. Now for some reason, the exact same reference to Obama is somehow out of bounds to those on the left who showed all the sensitivity of a injured cobra to Bush.
If blacks want real equality, not just a version suitable for fairy tales or coffee table books, they need to drop the "whoa is me" routine every time someone points to them in less than idyllic fashion.
If you don't think Obama looks more like a chimp than Bush (again, whose reference as a chimp was apparently fine with liberals), visit an ophthalmologist.
The degree of outrage from those on the left hints of a subtle style of racism all its own. Kind of like saying "We know he looks like a chimp, we just don't want anyone expressing it out loud."
For those on the PC goon patrol; can comedians tell jokes about his holiness or is that forbidden as well?
Who are the Jewish cops anyway (just kidding)
We have seen this happen in New York and throughout America on numerous occasions, only there was no bill to justify the shootings.
This is how ANYTHING and
This is how ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that even remotely criticizes, critiques or outright attacks Obama and his policies will be treated.
Race pimps like Sharpton and Jackson will call everything racist because they are desperate for attention since finding themselves irrelevant since Obama was elected.
And the White House will either not comment or offer weak hearted denials that XYZ is racist, in essence keeping the idea alive.
The problem is, it will be become the boy who cried wolf. Americans are only going to take racism charges so many times, especially over a friggin cartoon that has nothing to with #1 Obama and #2 race.
At some point, Obama is going to have to say (or at least should) that the very fact he is standing in the White House, earned the title President of the United States means that we need to carefully look at what we throw around as racist. How racist can a country in which 65 million people elect a black man actually be?
And while we have cases of cops beating blacks because they are blacks, or people hurting muslims because of their religion or hispanics being attacked...we need to focus our racial attention to ACTUAL racist and bigotted acts and issues and not stupid cartoons!
Long story short...GROW UP...Muslims rioted and murdered over the Mohammad cartoon a couple of years ago....seriously we are just a few people short of such stupid actions over a cartoon.
obvious racism
Who would expect any less less from the heartland, one of the last bastions of the racist GOP. It must be quiet comfort to your readers that their lowest basest bigoted instincts are affirmed by the local racist publication. Say the cartoon was not racist all you like. That does not change the truth of it being a complete racist slur. It is vile and disgusting that you choose to defend an obvious racist attack by the NY Post.
racism
The GOP is racist, yet it is the democrats who have an x-KKK LEADER in the senate right now, and it's democrats who support affirmative action.
There are racist people in this world. Some of them are republicans, some of them are democrats. Holy batman.
And most of the people who are offended, aren't even in the group of people who should be offended, if this was even remotely offensive. Some people just wake up in the morning and need drama.
Racial Innuendo and History
While we All have inner demons and racism of different sorts, sometimes they rear their Ugly heads when opportunity presents itself and this is obviously the case. Denial and Pride are the instigators when drastic change is initiated like here in the USA. While our countries History shows the reference to Negros as monkeys is documented, what is even more disturbing is the Innuendo to the monkey being shot. The unfortunate incident in the news with the actual chimpanzee is merely an opportunity for the Old guard to exercise its inner beliefs and desires thru Any excuse possible. God Bless America to Accept change and heal our Dangerous Inner Demons!.
Entertainment
The cartoon blatantly targets the authors of the bill, who are members of congress. Yet, Mr. Sharpton's first instinct is to connect the image of a chimpanzee with Barack Obama. This tells us something about Sharpton's subconcious view of Obama. He attempts to make a racist issue out of it because it's automatic publicity. Actually, the whole issue will soon fall into the entertainment category since no one takes Al Sharpton seriously anyway.
