President Obama's decision to close the Gitmo prison leaves an important question unanswered: where do they go now? Some have suggested they be transferred to Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., but both Sens. Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback oppose this proposal.
For one, Leavenworth does not have the facilities to support an influx of prisoners. It would require greater security, more resources, and alterations to the facility to provide for such detainees.
Secondly, as a resident of Kansas City, I would feel unsafe that a group of possible terrorists would be situated less than 40 miles away. These prisoners would stop at nothing to wreak havoc on innocent American civilians.
Especially with so many military installations in our area such as Whiteman Air Force Base and Fort Riley, such locations would be likely targets for possible terrorist attacks. One can look no further than the plans to attack Fort Dix, New Jersey to see the scope of their evil intentions.
Finally, there are better locations, if not in America, but in other parts of the world where such prisoners can be transported. If this is truly an international war on terror, then our European allies must get involved in both the prosecution and punishment of such violators of freedom and democracy.
America has other viable alternatives than Leavenworth. How about sending them to the middle of the desert, like say Death Valley, California or maybe it is time to reinstate Alcatraz island?
President Obama and the Justice Department must find an alternative to Gitmo prison, but it is high time that Kansans join together and tell the administration: NOT IN OUR BACKYARD!

amen to that
The sloppy way this has been handled under the previous administration is not only unconscionable, it is irresponsible.
It's not a war, it is an invasion
While I have no authoritative source to ascribe info to I was told 2 years ago while on a consulting assignment on the base that 6 or 7 had escaped "since Clinton took office." That came from an officer who had reason to know. The facility is unarguably outdated.
While I do not support Obama's decision to close Gitmo, I think I understand it. I do not believe that the location of Gitmo had anything to do with the Bush Administration's decision to use the waterboarding techniques on the few that they selected as worthy of that treatment.
I will state though that I am certainly not among those who believes that the prisoners held there are entitled to the same treatment as American citizens. It is, after all, still a war.......and it is worthy of consideration that a fairly significant number of released Gitmo detainees have been recaptured in the field a second time.
We invaded 2 countries and picked up citizens off the street because someone thought they might be terrorists.
It's a repulsive miscarriage of justice. And the sad thing is that even if some of these detainees may really be bad guys, we have mistreated them so badly that we will have a hard time holding them in custody.
I favor a chain of evidence, habeus corpus and representation, especially for the worst criminals we capture. I want them to remain in custody and not released on a technicality.
ah
shades of the sentiment of Barbara Bush when she said that "things were working out very well" for Katrina refugees who'd lost their homes and were camping out in the Houston Astrodome, since they were "underprivileged anyway."
Yeah, those guys who are being held without any legal recourse in a foreign prison by the U.S. should feel grateful to be in their "country club."
People like you undermine American values more than Osama Bin Laden ever could.
terrorist?
Weren't most of the guys imprisoned picked up while engaging in guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan or Iraq?
It seems like you have an overbroad label, and even so, it hasn't been proven because they haven't had the chance to defend the charges.
The ignorance of the left
Apop, Gitmo was not a "torture" chamber as you and most of the Bush hating left think. You need to actually do research for yourself on how the military runs their detainment facilities rather than getting your information from Amnisty International, the UN or the mainstream press. These butchers get three hots and a cot, they get all their proper Muslim meals, get their prayer times, etc. That is a country club compared to the Third World sh**holes they hail from. And some of the "innocent" detainees that the military has released, have been documented as found back on the battlefield fighting our best and bravest.
Apop, I bet you have never even heard that the military guards down there get feces and urine thrown at them constantly, get insulted by the inmates at every turn and they can do nothing about it. And then they get insulted by ignorant fools like you who only get their news from Keith Olberman.
Chazzykc: you are partly correct. The old prison is over 100 years old, yet it is no longer in use and there is a newer, modern facility on post. It opened in 2003.
Its Not the Location
The reason GITMO was used in the first place was to hold stateless actors who perform terrorists acts out of the traditional legal systems. THey are not soldiers of a state, thus they are not permitted or granted the same rights as prisoners of war. THey are not criminals who commit crimes within a legal society and thus should be afforded the same legal protections that we grant all citizens of this nation.
The terrorists at GITMO, and that is what they are, fall into a legal black hole. Moving them out of GITMO and into another facility, I nominate a prison in the chicago area, or one in San Francisco, or better yet in VT, does not change the fact that they are terrorists and we still do not have a system in place to try them. Its like putting lipstick on a terrorist, he is still a terrorist.
fair criticism apop
I was careless and failed to put "'s around the statements of the arab authorities who uttered them.
