Last month Caroline Kennedy really, really wanted to be a U.S. Senator from New York.

Suddenly, Kennedy is out of the picture for "personal reasons." What changed? Two things:

-- The more New Yorkers heard from Kennedy and knew about her, the less they wanted her to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. That's what discouraging polls showed about Kennedy, who earlier had surged into contention based mostly on name recognition.

-- Others wanted the job more, campaigning for it harder, led by Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo who still may or may not get the appointment this week from New York Gov. David Paterson.

In December Kennedy had mounted a public campaign for the job, saying at one point, "I think I bring a lifetime of experience to this."

And at another point, she said, "I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I would be the best (for the job)."

But in the end the Kennedy magic wasn't enough to convince Paterson to quickly appoint her.
