By E. Thomas McClanahan, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist
Jimmy Pethokoukis makes a good case. The looming recession looks to be shaping up as worse than the downturn of 1990-91, which resulted in a very slow recovery and helped the GOP recapture Congress in 1994. Today's problems, largely rooted in the slow-to-recover housing sector, look a lot worse than 1990's problems. Pethokoukis reports that Barack Obama's advisers are already worried about the elections in 2010.
That's right, the "O" in "Obama" may stand for "One Term." For starters, there's a strong chance that when voters head to the polls on Nov. 2, 2010, they likely will still think the economy is awful. Not much debate about that. (Good chance the Democrats' two-election winning streak comes to an end.) And while voters may be somewhat patient for two years, patient for four years?
For another view, see James Stewart's recent column . He argues that with great challenges come great opportunities, and "this is a great time to be president of the U.S. ..."
Stewart is bouyantly optimistic, but I'd say Jimmy P. offers the more convincing case. Obama is in for some very tough sledding.

Got fired
Laura Scott
Lee Judge
...good riddins!
Jeffrey Flannagan (Sports)
Hearne Christopher (FYI gossip)
The top two (especially Judge) are a good start.
Oh my god!
The Star has but one conservative columnist, and the left wants him gone. If they were really interested in being balanced, they'd drop a few more of the libbies and replace them with conservatives. The recent firings were a good start, but it is still ridiculously out of balance. Oh well, I can always get my fix reading Ann Coulter online.
Just Who Got Fired
which columnists are "with" us no more????
Thanks Tom
For presenting something that requires a willingness to read, reflect and look forward with a dose of "truth serum".
It seems that the lefties on the blog are less than receptive to any view that fails to look through the rose colored glasses of obamamania.
Of the two links I felt that Stewart's, though far more optimistic, was less realistic and, like Obama's campaign, based more on hope than on the pragmatics of conditional realities. Mr Stewart is right though, in his assessment of how presidents (generally) get eleveated to "great" status. In that context, Obama's opportunity is truly in very rare space.
We all hope that he is able to rise to the troublesome challenges that he has before him. I however, share your doubts at his (or anyone's) ability to overcome so much quickly enough to avoid a massive movement to the right in the midterms in '10.
I will not bother the readers with what I fear so that I might save them their needy feelings of retribution....I will only offer that I genuinely hope that Obama succedes.
If he does not, the reality of a Carter-like massive stagflation economic conundrum is the unfortunate, likely result. If that happens and a Bobby Jindal type gains traction, Obama is likely doomed to a one term experience.
McClanahan a SORE McCain Supporter
Thank God the rest of America doesn't think like E. Thomas McClanahan. McCain and McClanahan were wrong on Obama before the election and now McClanahan still wants to continue his verbal assault on Obama before he even takes office. He has even tried to blame Obama for the current economic problem in America. If I had my choice McClanahan would be a "O"ne Time writer and looking for new job. Maybe something he actually good at. I heard the Trash Department needs a public speaker.
You folks must remember - Mr. McClanahan was for McCain
And very likely will publish and and all negative writings about him.
I would have thought that people who could see 4 years into the future would be investing heavily on the next iPhone, or hybrid car, or Hydrogen fuel cell, not kicking a person in advance before they even get to the starting gate.
I think I am reading some babbling from sore losers.
Wonder what they would have written if McPalin had won.
Where was their crystal ball?"
None of the economic "wise men" who are now predicting the future with such clarity ever saw the present recession looming on the horizon. Yet they have the temerity to appear on every television program spouting their new found wisdom and writing learned articles without even a tinge of embarrassement. Where were they during the last eight years?
Asinine post
Assess the administration after they take office, not 2 months before.
