Jimmy Pethokoukis makes a good case. The looming recession looks to be shaping up as worse than the downturn of 1990-91, which resulted in a very slow recovery and helped the GOP recapture Congress in 1994. Today's problems, largely rooted in the slow-to-recover housing sector, look a lot worse than 1990's problems. Pethokoukis reports that Barack Obama's advisers are already worried about the elections in 2010.
That's right, the "O" in "Obama" may stand for "One Term." For starters, there's a strong chance that when voters head to the polls on Nov. 2, 2010, they likely will still think the economy is awful. Not much debate about that. (Good chance the Democrats' two-election winning streak comes to an end.) And while voters may be somewhat patient for two years, patient for four years?
For another view, see James Stewart's recent column . He argues that with great challenges come great opportunities, and "this is a great time to be president of the U.S. ..."
Stewart is bouyantly optimistic, but I'd say Jimmy P. offers the more convincing case. Obama is in for some very tough sledding.
