John McCain has just won the state of Missouri at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday by fewer than 6,000 votes.

The final, unofficial totals recorded by the Secretary of State's office: 1,442,613 votes for McCain and 1,436,745 for Barack Obama.

The victory means little to McCain, who's already lost the presidency to Obama.

But the outcome means a little more to the pride of many Missouri voters: The state on Tuesday failed to vote for the eventual president of the United States for only the second time since 1904.

The other exception was 1956. That year, Missourians endorsed Illinois Democrat Adlai Stevenson over Kansas Republican Dwight Eisenhower, running for re-election.
