Sarah Palin's candidacy took a nosedive Friday. And that's going to sting John McCain as their campaign lurches forward the next three weeks.

A state investigator released a report that found Palin violated Alaska's ethics law when she tried to get an ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police.

This is a devastating blow to Palin's reputation as a maverick and high-ethics person.

The report found that Palin "knowingly permitted" the pressure placed on Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to get rid of trooper Mike Wooten.

But Monegan refused and Palin eventually fired him. That broke a state ethics law which prohibits using one's official office to pursue a personal interest.

Palin' supporters already are attacking the report as being partisan.

But it was unanimously adopted by a bipartisan committee that had authorized it.
