Even more prominent conservatives in the media are saying out loud what many Americans think: Sarah Palin is not qualified to become vice president of the United States.
This backlash doesn't come from the liberal mainstream media that have been hounding Palin since she was announced as John McCain's running mate.
Instead, it's respected voices from the conservative side of the media aisle -- like columnists George Will and Kathleen Parker, who went so far as to suggest that Palin step down from the ticket for the good of the GOP.
The latest well-known conservative Palin basher is David Brooks, one of the very few remotely conservative voices on The New York Times opinion pages.
In a Monday speech, Brooks said Palin "represents a fatal cancer to the Republican Party."
"Do I think she’s ready to be president or vice president? No, she’s not even close to that."
Specifically, Brooks has written that Palin "has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness."
Well said by Mr. Brooks.
Palin, of course, will brush this off as another attack from the mainstream media, even though it comes from what should be a friendly crowd of conservatives.

And this is totally irrelevant but I've wanted to say it for a while. My father in law flew F-4s Phantoms - as a Wing Commander- in the same war McCain flew in. He EARNED all his stars and bars, no father to help him out. My father in law flew over 400 missions into North Vietnam. He is a RIVER RAT - it is an elite group of VN era pilots. He lost NO PLANES in 10 years of flying them, and did NOT get shot down. He was very good at his job. HE was a damn good pilot and a HERO. Getting shot down early in your career does not make one a hero.
I guess that opinion will probably brand me a communist....

It indicates clearly that by bringing Sarah Six-Pack on board McCain's advisers thought they'd accomplished something clever. Now it's becoming apparent they've succeeded only in narrowing their appeal to "real" Republicans, in their words, not "intellectual" Republicans. The RNC can't even keep the paid suits in the news media on board.
It's of no practical value only in the sense that McCain's toast. If you are, in fact, a sincerely concerned Republican, do you ever fantasize about what would be happening right now with, say, Romney or Giuliani out on the stump? It'd be a horse race, if nothing else.
Do you honestly believe that historically the Republican pundits have shown a chronic inability to hold their noses for the national candidates to get the win?
Come on. At some point you admit a mistake was made and move on. George Will has.

My point about Yael's observation concerning who is and isn't qualified in the eyes of Ivy League conservative pundits is that basicly nobody on this year's tickets met their mininmum qualifications test.
So this may not be the best place for an Obama supporter to shout out "you go boy" to David Brooks and George Will on the happy coincidence that they all disapprove of Sarah Palin at once.
It's not really great evidence in support of the case for either side and it certainly is of no practical value to voters at this late date.
