The ditch-Biden rumor won't go away.
This is the rumor that has Joe Biden dropping out so that Barack Obama can replace him with Hillary Clinton. Or maybe Kathleen Sebelius.
It pops up on blogs of all political stripes. Andrew Malcolm, a blogger for The Los Angeles Times, had a post on it today. A few days ago I saw Matt Lauer interviewing somebody about it on Today.
Enough! Obama has been campaigning for, like, forever. Long enough for us to see that mercurial moves are not his style. He picked Biden because of his foreign affairs credentials and his long record in the Senate. Everyone knew Biden was a wind bag when Obama selected him. His faux pas on the campaign trail are no surprise to anyone who's followed the U.S. Senator from Delaware. He's a walking gaffe machine, but no one in the know would ever call him vacuous, or uninformed, or anything less than knowledgeable.
Before the bloom faded away from GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, the thinking in some quarters was the Obama made a mistake not selecting Clinton, and that maybe he should sacrifice Biden and correct the mistake.
Absolutely not. Hillary might bring some votes to the ticket, but she would want something for them. She'd want a steering wheel in the next administration, is what she'd want.
Obama knew he couldn't run an administration with Clinton in the arena. It's a credit to him that he passed her over. Governing is more important than politicking.
Biden was a good choice. And if a running mate takes a powder, I don't expect it to be him.

The VP kiss of death doesn't involve lipstick (ask Tom Eagleton)
The VP kiss of death is failure to back your original choice "1,000%" and then to replace the nominee as George McGovern did in 1972.
McGovern named Kennedy in-law Shriver as his second VP choice after revelations that Sen. Eagleton had undergone past electro-shock therapy treatments for depression forced him off the ticket.
The Nixon 1972 reelection margin was so large no one to this day dares risk changing the the VP nominee no matter how bad the feeling of buyer's remorse.
Talk about in the tank!

Now Obama puts something above winning?
Are you really trying to say that Obama risked winning to have a good administration? He feared having a woman and Casserolean on the ticket together. Black, white, Muslem and a woman was too much of a risk so he went with Old Joe. He admitted his lack of experience in that choice just as McCain's selection of Palin was an admition of his age and lack of personaility.
Biden will fade in the background like all VP's until it is time for him to run for President himself but Palin will be a marketing tool to bring some star quality to McCain's Whitehouse so she will be more visable. Otherwise, the VP really doesn't matter. I have every confidence that the Secret Service is capable of making sure that neither Biden or Palin are a heartbeat away

Great snark--I appreciate it so early in the am.
cynical?
Now, McCain's pick of the unqualified Palin was the epitome of cynical.
By contrast, Obama's pick of the eminently qualified Biden was pragmatic and practical, providing him with a proven leader with a broad knowledge base. It signaled that he is serious about governing, rather than simply winning an election.
Re: jenniferm
It was definitely a cynical pick. It was a tacit admission that he was woefully lacking in experience in really anything, but even more than that was what it said about how the candidate thinks of us, the electorate. They thought they needed an old white guy above all else to assuage the, oh, 50% or so of America that they believe is brutally racist.
