By George Harris, Kansas City Star Readers Advisory Panel 2008
Who won the debate?
Ignore all commentators' opinions expressed without evidence. The winner is determined by the numbers, especially the votes of the undecided. Here are some preliminary answers:
CBS Insta Poll shows Barack Obama won 39% to John McCain's 25% with 36% saying the debate was a draw.
Insider Advantage reports of those polled Obama won 42% to McCain's 41% with Undecided 17%
CNN reports voter opinions that Obama "did better" 51%, McCain "did better" 38%
The CNN poll showed men were evenly split, but women gave Obama higher marks 59% to 41% for McCain.
The CNN pollster noted a slight Democratic bias in the survey. Well, there just are more Democrats in the country. So more Democrats watched. However, this may also suggest Democratic enthusiasm which will help turn out the vote.
The MSNBC on-line (non-scientific) poll showed Obama winning the debate 52% to 33%. (But this is what one would expect from such a poll at MSNBC because of the nature of its viewers.)
MediaCurves.com reported Independents favored Obama overall 61% to 38%. (I do not know this organization or know how it conducts polls, so take results with a couple of grains of salt.)
Some free analysis: As I noted on this site during and after the debate, McCain appeared angry and dismissive of Obama and generally impressed as someone who would slap colleagues across the aisle if reaching over to them. He said several times in the debate that he hasn't won the Miss Congeniality contest in the Senate, and he proved why during the debate.
I suspect that women voters especially would be turned off by McCain's sarcastic tone because women do tend to be the conciliators in our society and saw Obama display those conciliatory qualities very well in the debate. Obama looked at McCain, and McCain wouldn't return the eye contact but rather glared or displayed a tight and angry expression.
I also suspect (but don't have the data to support) that older voters were also turned off by Senator McNasty. I believe older voters will also be reassured that, though McCain has been around longer, Obama has a good grasp of foreign affairs and can learn quickly. He impressed as a statesmen, in marked contrast to McCain's warrior demeanor.
McCain referred to Obama as naive or as not understanding on many issues when the listener probably saw a mere difference of opinion. McCain's condescenion felt annoying; to the listener who might agree or disagree with Obama, Obama nevertheless was making good points, not naive ones.
In general, I think the country is tired of negativity, and McCain's performance didn't give anyone the impression that age has mellowed him. In fact, he seemed rather proud of his continuing bellicose manner. The country seems ready for a change from the "fighting as first choice crowd."
Watch for new polls over the next week. Things can shift for a variety of reasons as people reflect on the debate.

Petulant man
McCain likes to portray himself in ways that shows he is a legend in his own mind. What I see is a petulant, egocentric, selfish creep and an opportunist who uses his POW experience to gain pity and sympathy and then while you're not looking, stabs you in the back. In addition, he is erratic, changing from day to day. Let him retire in peace. And if he wants to retain any fibre of dignity before he leaves the scene, he should just shut his trap.
Petulant man as Contrasted to the messiah
Who kicked-off his political road in the house of a nonrepentent terriorist, William Ayres, sat in his church for 20 years listening to a racist minister, Reverend Wrong and his buddy Father Pflager...
Obama, closet racist, socialist, pacifist, unfit to lead....
Experience Doesn't Equal Common Sense
Sonofrogue's comment is amusing: "the painful lack of experience and world knowledge was blatantly obvious in Obama's ramblings". All McCain did was name-drop and brag about all his junkets. His "substance" was downright stupid: Let's NOT talk to people we don't like. Yes, because we can see how well that policy has worked with Cuba. And let's NOT attack Bin Laden in Pakistan because Pakistan might get mad." Whine, whine, sniffle, sniffle. The greatest enemy of the U.S. in history, and McCain is afraid of attacking him??? Pakistan, who is relying on American aid already??? If they are harboring Bin Laden, they deserve to get attacked. And I'm not forgetting that this is the man who made jokes about bombing Iran and pledged to stay 100 years in Iraq, no matter whether it bankrupts the U.S. He may have experience, but experience does not equal common sense.
The cost of wars, and the trade relationships that ensue.
Wunderwood,
As far as expenditures for the two wars are concerned here is a link to their books taken from a congressional report: http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL33110.pdf
Essentially, we have about $15 Billion for Afghanistan (OEF) and $53 Billion for Iraq back in 2003. By 2008, Afghanistan doubled to $33 Billion and Iraq tripled to $149 Billion. So far we have spent $149 Billion for Afghanistan and $653 Billion for Iraq. Don’t beat me up on this, but Iraq seems to be more strategic in the oil sense, so we may lose a lot if we leave the country prematurely. Then again, if Kuwait is any example, we may be in for a surprise.
Currently we are led to believe our current gas price crisis is apparently due to the supply and demand equation teetering to an inadequate supply. Others suggest that the problem is from OPEC limiting production. Anyway, it is clear this has been extremely damaging to our economy (inflation), and should be a close second in priorities for either Obama or McCain.
Let’s look at the oil distribution equation a little closer. At 2+ million barrels per day, Kuwait ranks ** 3rd ** in the world for total exports of oil, right behind Saudi Arabia and Iran. However, if you take a look at the DOE report: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Kuwait/Oil.html Kuwait graciously exports a measly 10% to the USA, 10% to Western Europe, a whopping 60% to Asia-Pacific (Japan and India), and 20% to other miscellaneous countries.
Excuse me??? Didn't didn’t we recently invest a lot of blood and cash to save these poor little rich kids from total annihilation a few years ago?
In this context, I am trying to understand why our oil supply has been short for months? I need the numbers (yet) to corroborate just how much we need to make up the deficit, but it does not take a rocket scientist to see Kuwait could make a difference. If and when Iraq stabilizes, I wonder if they are going to do the same to us?
Rather than squabbling over local USA oil resources ... which will take years to develop ... perhaps both Obama and McCain should add an explicit plan to cash in our Kuwaiti chips for **now.
The polls seem to have it correct
Despite the poll results as reported by George Harris, there is a continuing push by McCain supporters to convince the public that the debate was dead-even. And even CNN commentators immediately after the debate were reluctant to admit that Obama clearly had made the more favorable impression. Character showed throughout the event. The portrait of a president most certainly was not the glaring John McCain who forced himself to allow Obama his time to speak.--Tom Camfield
Re: Obama has no plan for the economy.
CitizenPower, thank you for the web link. Be assured I reviewed both links describing Obama’s plan and McCain’s plan several days before the debates, and then again right after the debates. If you have not seen this one, I encourage you to examine it: http://www.johnmccain.com/mccaineconomics/
In a way, both candidates have pieces of the solution in their plans: Cut spending (McCain) and cut unemployment (Obama). Let’s look at both of these, with this link as a reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_budget
We have approximately a $3 trillion budget estimated for 2009. The first pie chart shows federal spending for 2007. The question is: Given that we have added $700 billion to the spending, where are the candidates going to get the funds? You can’t cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid which are about one-third of the expenditures. That leaves probably less than $2 trillion left for cuts.
Budget cuts are not going to solve the problem by itself either, but McCain has the right idea to start here. It is an unpopular stance, but at least McCain is being honest about the future.
On the other hand, if you review your link, you will see that, other than spending more, Obama has no clear plan for sources of revenue to balance his generous spending and tax cuts with a $700 billion bailout. Obama also has a credibility issue with his $931 million of pork, listed as "Other Discretionary" in the budget link. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/743/ Generosity is a very easy popular stance, but disastrous without resource substance. Without some foundation in major spending cutbacks, Obama's economic plan is ill-advised.
Let’s look at the other piece of the solution: unemployment. You can’t pay a mortgage if you don’t have a job, or if your income is insufficient. This is the key to balancing the bailout (not the budget). Spending cuts will only buy us time; however, fixing the employment picture will enable the foreclosed families to divide-and-conquer this problem, but over 10 to 20 years.
Right now, neither candidate has the complete solution, but spending cuts will have to be the bigger part of the solution, and that is why McCain is stronger. McCain could press his advantage if he comes up with a solid plan for employment. Conversely, Obama could press his advantage, if he can give a solid plan that includes the "unpopular" aspects of spending cuts to handle our existing economic dilemma.
This is the main reason I am still undecided about both candidates.
As far as the other stuff is concerned, I am not interested in debates finger-pointing at Democrats, Republicans, or bank execs. They can answer for their transgressions later. Right now we should look beyond those distractions and focus on their solutions. I just hope *at least one of them* comes up with a viable solution.
jhughey those look like interesting links - thank you
I am going to have to spend some time before adding anything to what you posted here, but I did want to get your opinion on the costs of the ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If I understand it correctly, these wars are "off the books", which is a pretty silly way to run a budget, but no one is suggesting that this change.
The cold fact is that this is an enormously expensive piece of the federal "pie" but I have only heard Obama talk about the cost. He rightly observes that the sooner we get the Iraqis to pay for the cost, the better. Even then, however, we can't afford it and it is destroying our choices for improvements here at home.
I feel the best way to balance the budget is going to be doing many of the things you have already discussed, along with ending the war in Iraq in a prompt and orderly fashion (no cut and run but no endless footdragging either). We then need to take some of those troops and find OBL once and for all.
The "elephant in the room" (you should pardon the expression) is the enormous off the books cost that drags our economy down. I am interested in reading your thoughts on this.
Logical Fallacy
I'm willing to accept your statement that there are more Democrats in the country, but this DOES NOT mean that more Democrats watched. You're assuming an equal proportion of both groups watched, without any logical basis for such an assumption.
I believe that there are, unfortunately, more Detroit Tigers fans than Tampa Bay Rays fans, but that doesn't mean that more Tigers fans watched the ballgame last night. In fact, the opposite is quite likely true.
It only makes the situation worse when you use that unsupported assumption to "suggest Democratic enthusiasm" when CNN has admitted that there was a slight bias. If you include more people from one group in a poll, it doesn't mean that it is the more enthusiastic group, it just means that you didn't do your job quite as well as you should have done.
If the logic you've employed were your legs, you couldn't even hop.
Also, while I personally agree that McCain seemed condescending with his comments about Obama being naive, I fail to see how calling a candidate McNasty does anything but indicate that you are incapable of making an unbiased judgement.
Obama should have demonstrated a clear plan for the economy.
My appreciation to George Harris for the follow-up. To clarify my position, I do not take media polls seriously, and those results did not concern me.
Honestly, when it concerns the current economic crisis, I don’t care if McCain looked cross-eyed, slobbered with green spittle, sucked his thumb, and jumped up and down on one foot every time he looked at Obama. In spite of the perceived personality disorders, McCain demonstrated a clear plan for the economy and that puts him one step closer to getting elected. As far as Obama is concerned, if he fails to divulge a credible plan for the economy this far in his campaign, then he plans to fail.
Obama has no plan for the economy??
jhughey, I'm afraid you're uninformed if you think Obama has no plan for the economy. You can read all about it at: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/
Furthermore, John McCain is a self-described "deregulator" and the lack of regulation is the single biggest reason the nation is in this liquidity crisis. Greed drove the recklessness of mortgage brokers, hedge fund managers, investment bankers, and some borrowers, but lack of over-sight allowed the transactions.
Who has the Experience to be President?
No one has the experience to be president, only the potential. I believe Obama has what it takes to be the next president of the United States.
McCain's body language says a lot
Denise Tiller, Midwest Voices 2008 Panelist
McCain never once looked at Obama during the debate. If you can't look your opponent in the eye there's something wrong. It made him look both weak and condescending.
Denise Tiller, Midwest Voices 2008 Panelist
But Barry
kept calling John by his first name, while Senator McCain maintained decorum, formality and respect suitable to the high level debate by referring to his opponent Obama politely as Senator Obama. I think the old guy was much more respectful than the young too familiar whippersnapper.
Standing accused of bias
Can't help but comment about a reader's accusation of my bias: Yes, I'm an Obama supporter. But I think I separated the poll data from my opinions. The numbers are what they are The numbers themselves may have been gathered in a biased way, but not by me. I've tried to note potential for bias where I see it, such as the MSNBC poll.
I used to like McCain a lot and am really sad for him because of how he has conducted himself over the last several years. But not too sad because he's really rich and will do fine without any pity. But I think he has sold his soul. No, I have no data on this.
Regarding racism issues: I don't doubt there will be people who don't vote for Obama because he has a father from Kenya. Too bad for them if that's their criterion.
But a candidate shouldn't be chosen based on who we'd want to have a beer with or who we'd want to go to the prom with or who we wouldn't want our daughter to go to the prom with. Personally, I find Sarah Palin a very appealing and talented person. I also would love to have a beer with Palin, McCain or Obama. But I'm really tired of stupid wars because in my work I'm seeing the young men and women with PTSD suffered in a war that shouldn't have started.
OK. So now my bias is more clear. Back to the polls!!!!
Obama nailed it...
I have to say that at least Obama tried to have a clean, respectful debate. Unlike McCain who acted scared out of his mind and refused to even face Obama. His snide remarks, facial expressions, etc., made for a negative attitude which is NOT what our country needs right now. I don't appreciate the Obama "just doesn't understand" remarks--I wonder how many times McCain actually said that throughout the debates. If this is McCain's only dispute, I don't think it will stick. Obama may lack experience, but he is quick to learn, do the research, and make the changes that need to be made in the best of our country's interest.
My favorite moment in the whole wide world...
...was Obama saying that if we get bin Laden in our sights and Pakistan doesn't want to play along we take him out. AND THEN MCCAIN ARGUED WITH HIM.
Is there some kind of Republican THING about not wanting to kill bin Laden?
amusing conclusions drawn by Obama Kool Aid drinkers....
The painful lack of experience and world knowledge was blatantly obvious in Obama's ramblings, it was like watching a kind professor instruct a young freshman.
I discount the CBS "scientif poll" about as much as I would a "factual article" in the New York Times.
Ramblings? They had
Ramblings? They had substance... did you listen?
Re: Harris' biased article on McCain-Obama Debate
When I hear a debate, I listen for substance. I don't try to read sarcasm, threats to hit, or other amateur pseudopsychiatric analysis of the candidate Harris is obviously biased against.
That being said, my biggest concern is "It's the Economy Stupid!". Obama was asked more than once as to how he plans to spend more and yet compensate for the $700 Billion dollar bailout. His answers had no clear plan or substance.
On the other hand, McCain has a track record of cutting spending. Obviously neither knows what our tax revenue will be next year, but he *does* have a credible plan and it is clearly in the right direction. If we have a multi trillion dollar budget, then cutting spending is the only logical way to have enough funds to temporarily fund the bailout.
Obama clearly does not have a plan, and without one he will lead us further into economic disaster. If he does not have a credible plan this far into the presidential race, then we should be really concerned.
The debate notwithstanding, I am still undecided; however, articles like this do not help voters with objective decision making.
Obama will not only bring
Obama will not only bring further economic disaster to our country, but also in his lack of experience in foreign affairs. His reference on how to handle the situation with Iran and Mamoud Armadinejad diplomatically was scary. That leader has spent the past week in a New York hotel hosted and owned by one of Obama's major fund backers. That is even scarier.
I have it, Holmes!
Obama and fellow Muslim Ahmedinejad are conspiring in expensive hotel rooms to teach sex to Iranian four-year-olds! The fiends!
Is this news or op-ed?
So, the headline says "news", but the Obama bias tone says "op-ed".
Polls are useful, but a game. The article seems to start out "scientific" with all the statistics, but then ends with "watch the polls...things can shift." The headline needs to be less sensational and more reflective of the article content.
The term "Senitor McNasty" is rude, and so this must be "op-ed". How immature to resort to name calling to make a point.
New and Vibrant Vs. Old and Wornout
Our country has been doing the Neocon experiment for almost 30 years. These old ways of thinking have been proven wrong.
Trickle down economics just makes us all peons.
The strength of America comes from its people and a strong middle class. We need to stop corporate welfare and stop shipping jobs overseas.
It was obvious in the debate that McCain is just the same old worn out ideas. Like my grand daughter said, "Who wants to vote for that mean old Grandpa?" Obama is real change, not simply changing one old set of ideas for older ones.
How Did Barak Win?
As I watch the debate I was struck by the number of times Barack agreed or gave credit to McCain and the stark comparison it showed between the two men. At first glance those comments of agreeing - giving credit seem strange - even denying McCain the source of his maverick status by demonstrating that he could even work with McCain.
Barack's attacks where on the level of both style and information - Barack WON!!
racism
the comment about my daughter dating a black guy is the reason we have racism. The commenter cannot look past this as being a black and white issue ( no pun intended). In answer to this it would be as follows. I would discourage my daughter from dating someone like Michael Vick but I would encourage her to date someone like Barak Obama. I would not encourage her to date a white pedophile either just because he is white. These kind of comments 9 the previous ones) try and make this a black and white issue and it is not. As long as they do we will never get past this crap.
McCain-Obama Debate
Obama proved he's not ready for prime time. If he wins get ready for another 4 years of the Carter administration with a twist...
Racism 2008 Election ***********************************
Does the election really boil down to one question: Is it OK for my daughter to date a black guy? Think about it.
Answer
"Does the election really boil down to one question: Is it OK for my daughter to date a black guy? Think about it."
Yes. Next question.
What is Your Character?
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
--Dr. Martin Luther King
