Like most politicians, KC Mayor Mark Funkhouser likes to blame the media when things go wrong.

In his latest diatribe, Funkhouser says it's The Star's fault that wife Gloria Squitiro is in the spotlight.

Sure, the newspaper has been a leading critic of Funkhouser's ridiculous use of his wife as his unpaid chief of staff, someone he admits he can't do without.

Squitiro herself claims hardly anyone but the newspaper cares about her volunteer role at City Hall.

But as someone who wants Funkhouser to succeed as mayor, I realize the mayor and his wife have no clue what a lot of Kansas Citians are saying about them.

While they both claim most people who contact their office support Squitiro, I have to ask a simple question: Why are they holding that out as any kind of barometer?

To the mayor: Of course the people taking the time to contact you are going to support you. It's the people who aren't contacting you -- the vast majority of Kansas Citians -- who you ought to be worried about.

Those are the people who count on The Star to give them information on Funkhouser's and Squitiro's situation, given the unsteady job she's done at City Hall.

That's the media's role, whether Funkhouser likes it or not.
