I've been offline this week because of computer problems and I couldn't believe Ross Balano's blog comment in the paper this morning, ridiculing Barack Obama for linking patriotism to service and sacrifice.
How insulting to make a joke of service and sacrifice. I think he owes all the people who have ever served our country an apology. My brother is a retired Marine Master Sergeant and our daughter is a Sergent in the USAF. Laughing at Obama for suggesting patriotism involved service and sacrifice isn't funny.
Service and sacrifice is a big Republican theme. Kathleen Parker cited "generations of sacrifice" in defining a "full-blooded American" and I didn't notice Mr. Balano laughing at her.
President Bush and John McCain emphasize sacrifice so much they do not support the proposed revision to the GI Bill because they fear people will take the benefits and not re-enlist after multiple tours in Iraq.
The current GI bill benefits are less than mediocre particularly for young people we are asking to risk their lives. They even have to pay to get it. Considering the horrendous problems wounded vets are facing and the high suicide rates, we need to do a lot more to respect the sacrifice these young men and women are making and stop making jokes about patriotism.

Actually, nobody's been able to LOCATE him, much less extricate him. As far as lobbing bombs on Pakistan, remember, they have nuclear weapons now, not fifty years from now, as does India.
How about giving Pez Mujaraff seventy-two hours to produce bin Laden or his fifteen minutes of fame are up? Promise we'll get him into the Witness Protection Program with his own Krispy Kreme franchise.
