The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld a gambling law that will drain money from the state's residents while sending millions to out-of-state casino owners. What a "victory" for Kansans.
Now we'll get to see all the wonders of the state partnering up with gambling operators to fleece Kansans.

Wyandotte County will be a hotbed for the gamblers, especially if The Legends is selected as the site for the new casino.
The new site will compete with all the Missouri-side casinos, probably meaning one will go out of business sooner or later. So much for gambling's wonderful effects on the Missouri economy.

Not sure about that.

Those stories won't be in the Star. We will read about how some poor soul was trying to help their family, but the big, bad casinos were putting a gun to his head to keep gambling his family's money away. Advocating personal responsibility is not something the Star is too keen on doing.
I Have an Idea...
Let's give the casinos either porkulous money or bail them out. That way the big 0, the messiah, can claim some more "saved" jobs....
Which is it - gambling bad or you're mad MO could lose $$$?
Doesn't McClatchey own the Red Star? Aren't they based in Sacramento, California? Wouldn't that make them out of state owners who drains money from KS and MO residents? Since all the casinos I know about locally are owned by out-of-state owners, I don't get your point on that issue.
Stop being silly, Yael - the casinos will employ a lot of the same people you profess to be so concerned about with respect to gambling. But you're all over the map - first you whine about letting anyone gamble because they're all SOOOO stupid and are going to lose everything they own and must not be allowed to gamble, then you get upset about a new KS casino competing in the free market with a MO casino. What God mandated that only Missouri was allowed to have casinos, anyway? Are you implying that MO has a legal monopoly on casinos? You're really inconsistent - if you hate gambling so much, why do you care about that?
No one is forcing anyone to gamble. No one is forcing KS residents to drop their money in MO casinos, and if/when a KS casino opens, no one is forcing MO residents to drop their money in KS. These are 'states', Yael, and 'states' actually do compete for business. Competition benefits the consumer, since the casinos are forced to compete for business. When a market becomes overcrowded, the worst performer may have to move elsewhere or (gasp! shudder!) GO OUT OF BUSINESS - nothing wrong with that, it's the way we improve, getting rid of the chaff.
Prohibition didn't work and banning gambling doesn't work (just ask your local bookie and look at the gambling sites on the internet). People don't like nannies scolding them and telling them how to live every moment of their lives when it's really none of the nannies' business.
Personally, I know casino gambling (with the exception of poker) is a losing proposition. But the average player is not trying to get rich, they are trying to be entertained and have a good time, and gambling does provide that vicarious thrill. So someone drops $100 for an evening's entertainment every now and then - so what? How much do you think decent concert tickets cost these days, or a meal at a really good restaurant? Would you then ban those because of the cost to the person who can't really afford them but goes anyway because they enjoy it? Maybe pass a law that requires people to make a minimum yearly salary or be means-tested before they are allowed to purchase anything over $100? $200?
I'll save my wrath for the real gamblers - our miserable government who is gambling with all of our futures on economic disasters in the making.
well i agreed bad
well i agreed bad considering that nearly every state has a lottery and scratch off tickets.

Why does the state think
Why does the state think they should own a casino? If they want to legalize casinos, the do it, but the state has no business OWNING them.
Where are the fundamentalist Christians when you need them
Denise Tiller, Midwest Voices 2008
I grew up in a good Methodist family, where drinking, smoking, and gambling were bad things. They still are and yet gambling is the number two growth industry in Kansas?
Fundamentalist Christians should have an even stronger anti-gambling position. Gambling ruins more lives and families than abortion. Where is the Christian outrage? Why do they pick on women? Because they are an easier target and they don't have the money backing them that the casinos do. Their silence is hypocritical.
