Sen. John McCain is again promoting a gas-tax holiday for this summer. It remains a bad idea that would not ease Americans' financial pain at the pump.
If the 18.4-cent federal tax is suspended as McCain wants, the average motorist might save about $20 over three summer months.
However, even that estimated savings is in big doubt. Why? Because oil companies and service station operators could boost prices to eliminate any savings for motorists.
There's more bad news: The loss of billions in gas-tax revenue would reduce funding for road projects across the nation.
With less money to spend on those repairs, construction companies might be forced to lay off workers.
In other words, McCain's gas-tax holiday idea would bring worse roads for Americans and possibly higher unemployment.

Notice how the world will always come to an end
"If one dmaned dime of tax money stops". Now there's a fact boyo!
Stick to the facts
Notice how the other two comments deliberately avoid addressing the facts stated in this commentary.
Hard to argue with facts, isn't it?
Yes it was deliberate
I read it somewhere, went to the site, then cut and paste my quotes. It wasn't my intention to argue with the commentary.
Was that breaking some rule or something? What's your point?
I'm just unsure
how it was even relevant to the merits (or demerits) of the gas tax holiday McCain's proposing.
Gee, I wonder why.....
Just 17% of voters nationwide believe that most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage of election campaigns. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that four times as many—68%--believe most reporters try to help the candidate that they want to win.
....
Looking ahead to the fall campaign, 44% believe most reporters will try to help Obama while only 13% believe that most will try to help McCain. Twenty-four percent (24%) are optimistic enough to believe that most reporters will try to offer unbiased coverage.

Of course, commentary is different from reporting, but in this case I don't think the people are far off the mark.
OMG, SUSPEND A TAX,!!!!OMG the wold will end!!
It is funny to see the contortions of the alphabets in this gas price debate. Everything to increase production (drilling off shore or ANWR) is too little, or suspending the gas tax is little, etc.
Wonder why we are paying $4.00 a gallon folks?
Noe the Senate Dems want to impose a windfall profits tax......when that was tried in 1980 revenues from such a tax were 75% less than projected, domestic oil input fell 8% and imported oil increased by 16%.
Thank Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid folks, you might send them you Conoco bill to see if they will kick in, but don't hold your breath.
