Sen. John McCain is again promoting a gas-tax holiday for this summer. It remains a bad idea that would not ease Americans' financial pain at the pump.

If the 18.4-cent federal tax is suspended as McCain wants, the average motorist might save about $20 over three summer months.

However, even that estimated savings is in big doubt. Why? Because oil companies and service station operators could boost prices to eliminate any savings for motorists.

There's more bad news: The loss of billions in gas-tax revenue would reduce funding for road projects across the nation.

With less money to spend on those repairs, construction companies might be forced to lay off workers.

In other words, McCain's gas-tax holiday idea would bring worse roads for Americans and possibly higher unemployment.
