Governor Sebelius today vetoed HB 2019, a bill that would have required most Kansas voters to show a photo ID when voting beginning in 2010.
Exactly who is she trying to protect?
This bill would have exempted anyone over 65 years of age so it wasn’t the elderly.
The bill would have exempted disabled people so it wasn’t them.
The bill would have exempted active duty military personnel and their families so it wasn’t them.
The bill would have provided ID cards free of charge to poor people so it wasn’t them.
Most Kansans already have photo ID cards so it wasn't them.
Who IS she protecting then? Sadly, the only people left to protect are those who would be voting illegally. So all you dead people, all you illegal aliens, all you polyga-voters (those who like to vote more than once) take heart, the governor has protected your votes.
Hopefully the legislature will give the governor the slap down she deserves on this one and override the veto.
Ironically the bill would have taken effect in the very election that would choose the governor’s replacement. Hopefully, in that election Kansans will elect a governor who believes in eliminating voter fraud. One who understands the economics of energy and energy production instead of one who panders to radical environmentalists. One who believes that upholding the law is more important than protecting illegal abortionists. And one who won’t turn a blind eye to illegal immigration.

"Unless we require everyone have a national ID card and issue them for free (as well as giving out copies of birth certificates for free)then a voter ID is discriminatory."
Yep. And if we provide all those things for free, that costs tax dollars. If we don't provide those things, lawsuits will be filed which will also cost tax dollars to defend.
If we're going to pay tax dollars for a solution, why not be sure we have a problem first? There's been no evidence of a problem -- all evidence indicates that the system is working.
Sebelius was right to veto this waste of tax dollars.
