Zoey Belcher's distressing future
The Kansas City Star
Little progress was made today in a court hearing in Independence to determine who will eventually care for Zoey Belcher. That’s unfortunate, but par for the course it appears when looking at her sad case.
Zoey’s dad killed her mother and then himself. The fact that her dad was Jovan Belcher, a Kansas City Chiefs football player, ensures that Zoey’s case will be scrutinized closely by the media and many people.
Right now, the most distressing - and unfortunately predictable - part of her life is that Zoey’s relatives on her dad’s and mom’s sides are fighting over who’s going to care for her in the future.
Love and what’s best for Zoey may be part of the equation.
But let’s be honest: So is money.
Zoey Belcher will have the benefit of receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars to help care for her in the years ahead, thanks to various funds she will receive through the NFL, life insurances and efforts put in place to help her financially.
Already, the public has taken sides, with many people saying it would be unconscionable for Jovan Belcher’s mother to have anything to do with raising her granddaughter. She raised Jovan, it’s pointed out, and was in the house when Jovan shot and killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, Zoey’s mom.
But that reasoning will be attacked by others who think the family of Zoey’s mom isn’t any more able to take care of the infant daughter.
Lawyers will make money arguing the case, and Zoey will be tugged one way or the other.
It’s going to be a media circus for months.
Personally, I’m just glad Zoey isn’t old enough to fully comprehend what’s going on in her life right now.
