YouthFriends end sad day for Kansas City area children, adults
The Kansas City Star
Everyone in the Kansas City area should be saddened over YouthFriends deciding to end its operation on May 31.
The nonprofit organization for 18 years connected thousands of adult volunteers with children in schools throughout the metropolitan area. The children benefited from having caring adults commit at least a day a week to reading, doing math, emailing or just talking with the youths.
The adults benefited from being more connected with the concerns of the schools, teachers and young people.
The cost of continuing the effort, however, resulted in the agency shutting down. It’s no different for other educational institutions such as Christ the King Catholic School in Kansas City, St. Mary’s High School in Independence and the closure of some YMCA branches.
The costs are overpowering the community’s need and recipients’ ability to pay.
