Wow: KC's population surges by 3,400
The U.S. Census Bureau has some new information about how quickly cities are growing, and Kansas City is one of them.
So much for all that “KC is dying” negative mantra I hear too often.
The official 2010 Census was 459,787 people in Kansas City.
The estimate for mid-2011 was 463,202.
The link to the Census data is here.
Now, we’re not gaining a lot of ground: KC is still 37th largest city in nation, ahead of Mesa and behind Long Beach.
Plus, other cities in our neighborhood of size are gaining people, too, part of a trend where cities are doing better than many people had expected in attracting residents.
Other large KC area cities:
Overland Park went from 173,372 residents in 2010 Census to 176,185 in 2011. That’s up 2,800.
Kansas City gained almost 700 people, up to 146,453.
Olathe went from 125,872 to 127,907, up 2,000.
Independence went from 108,500 to 110,438, or up almost 2,000.
Lee’s Summit from 91,364 to 91,668, up 300.

11 months agoYeah right, Kay, because everybody knows that when the economy is booming, city dwellers always decide to take up farming.
