The whole nation is laughing at Missouri
So many people get their “news” these days from Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
And what are these American TV viewers seeing?
Well, this week, that Missouri is pretty much led by a hapless, laughable crew of state legislators.
Colbert weighed in first on Monday night with this report on the detestable “don’t say gay” bill authored by Steve Cookson of the House.
Colbert doesn’t show Cookson much mercy in skewering his discriminatory legislation.
Then on Thursday, Stewart aired this report on a ridiculous gun bill promoted by the clueless Wanda Brown.
Contributor Aasif Mandvi offers his usual droll lacerations of idiocy he sees in front of him.
I laughed heartily at both reports and at how stupid the Missouri lawmakers looked.
Then I remembered that … I live in Missouri. And people around the nation are laughing at this state.
Yikes.

1 year agoIf the Colbert & Stewart audiences are laughing at us, then we must be doing something right. Their(your) brand of nanny govt. approaches have worked really well these last 3+ YEARS, haven’t they YT???
Why can’t more people become discouraged so the big 0’s unemployment rate can get down to ZERO?

Allahakbar—why are you so fixated on what some third rate cable clown thinks?

You obviously didn’t watch the clip. You should be embarrassed by this woman! The Daily Show corespondent Aasif Mandvi successfully displays Rep. Brown’s hypocrisy and utter lack of intelligence. Every Missourian should be disgusted that this woman is representing our state. She makes us all look stupid.

1 year agoSo you haven’t seen them but you know they are wrong and misinformed. Time to break out of the fox “news” bubble you live in. If you want a feel for how most of the nation views MO and other backward states you need to watch Stewart and Colbert. Added bonus: Stewart was voted the most trusted newscaster. http://newsflavor.com/politics/us-politics/why-is-jon-stewart-americas-most-trusted-newscaster/

1 year agoYep, that’s Missouri for you. Backwards enough to be mocked on a national stage. The don’t say gay bill is another attempt to repress ideas (which is the opposite of education, we may as well burn books while we’re at it). I’d be more accepting of the “focus on core studies” argument if they were cutting out art, but instead they’re prohibiting the discussion of one lone idea.
I had not heard about the attempt to protect the already protected gun owners of the state, but certainly it’s both obvious and pointless political theater.
Finally, people should make it a point to listen to various news and information outlets, even the ones you detest. Heck, I listen to Rush at least once a week; You can stomach Stewart.

1 year agoNot being a wacher of this channel, can someone bring me up to date on how the “serious”, “urbane”“, and “sophisticated” politicians (aka Democrats) are faring on the Colbert and Stewart shows? The Native American Senate candidate Warren, the Keystone Cops:Hillary goes to China, and Sargent Schultz Holder knowing nothing on arming drug lords, would appear to offer a lot of material.
The Missouri state legislators, as well as the honorable Rep. Cleaver, are small time in comparison to the daily shenanigans perpetrated throughout the country.

You live in Lenexa–just do as I do–when I cross in to MO I just say “Im in Missouri, set your watch back 100 years”
If you let some late night cable loons drive your self esteem, about what this clown says about some other clown, how does that affect you?

“Let some late night cable loon drive your self esteem” What on God’s green earth are you talking about? My statement has nothing to do with self-esteem.BTW I live in MO now, have for 3 years.
To others - no one is saying to get all your news from the Daily Show. It can be a source of news just like Rush or Hannity, you just have to be able to recognize news from commentary and slant. The Daily Show is valuable because they point out the hypocrisy of politicians, like they did in the segment in question. They don’t only criticize one side, they criticize both sides.
The issue shouldn’t be the Daily Show anyways. It should be Rep. Brown’s hypocrisy. She wasted time with a bill to protect gun owners when they already have protection under the 2nd amendment. When asked why she would waste time on an already protected class of people while voting no to protect an unprotected group of people (LBGT people), she fumbled and mumbled and couldn’t give a good answer. She couldn’t name one instance when someone was fired for being a gun owner, while the Daily Show corespondent gave her multiple examples of LBGT people being fired for their sexual orientation. She’s wasting our states time and tax payer money on worthless bills while passing on a chance to protect people being fired for their sexual orientation.

1 year agoCome on, Jayhawks! You used to have more nuts per square foot of local government than could be consumed locally — not to mention anti-abortion felons. You are letting the nuts in Jeff City steal your national spotlight.
The longer the GOP holds the Legislature, the nuttier they get — crawling to the right of each other until they fall off their flat earth. Abortion? Contraception? Evolution? Sex Ed? Can’t wait until one of them want to repeal the Law of Gravity because it conflicts with the Rapture!

1 year agoI think all you Jon Stewart-haters out there are just a little jealous. Maybe you’ve heard that Jon Stewart viewers are better versed on current events (second only to NPR, thank you) than Fox viewers. Who by the way, are less informed than people who don’t watch ANY news. It’s true. Look it up.

In order to get Stewart’s and Colbert’s jokes, you have to already know what’s going on. Besides, no one’s under any illusion that it’s anything other than “Fake News.”
