What will Joe Arpaio come up with next?

It sounds like something out of the old “Andy Griffith Show” with Gomer Pyle making a “citizens arrest.”

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is putting together a plan to have up to 500 armed volunteers patrol areas just outside schools in the Phoenix area to prevent shootings.

The bizarre action follows the Dec. 14 attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 children and six educators dead. The Phoenix area patrols are to start soon at 59 schools in unincorporated areas and communities that pay Arpaio’s office for services, The Associated Press reports.

It sounds like the vigilante border patrols to guard against people crossing from Mexico into the United States. That’s working out really well, isn’t it?

The volunteers are not to go onto the school property unless they see something that could be threatening. They also aren’t to just sit in stationary locations.

The uniformed volunteers are to drive patrols covering several schools.

Let’s see, there is a history of the posse working to prevent and reduce issues in the local malls. Go figure that you would be against doing something with a history of success at reducing violence.
