What were Susan G. Komen officials thinking?
Susan G. Komen for the Cure officials are finding out the hard way that it’s not nice to mess with Planned Parenthood.
Actually the nuclear bad press fallout hitting Komen this week is just the beginning. Komen made the mistake of cutting hundreds of thousands of dollars in breast-cancer screening grants to the national women’s reproductive health care organization, saying it was because Planned Parenthood was under investigation in Congress.
Planned Parenthood for decades has been under constant fire over its pro-choice, women’s rights stand on abortions. A lot of politicians, especially those in Kansas, have found that messing with Planned Parenthood is like dancing on the third rail in a New York City subway. One is not expected to survive politically.
People, who normally are quiet, rally around Planned Parenthood and the reproductive health care services it offers to women, men and families. Planned Parenthood supporters come out of the closet and as a group stomp with steel-toed work boots anyone or anything that causes Planned Parenthood grief.
Komen, which had been the darling of organizations fighting breast cancer, needs to brace itself for a pretty hard and long political and fundraising beatdown.

Google+
They were thinking (correctly) that an organization with a billion dollar budget (over one third of which is taxpayer funded), and over 800 locations could do quite well without their grants which amount to way less than one tenth of one percent of Planned Parenthood’d budget.
The “Why?” is the elephant in the discussion room that you guys gleefully ignore.
Komen’s research discovered that Planned Parenthood is unable to provide ANY breast cancer screenings, tests or mammagrams at almost 91% of their locations.
Komen is a laser focused charity that has every right to monitor the use of their donated funds. They have every reason here to migrate those monies to a service provider that shares their focused goals.
I know it is seductive, Lewis, to spout nonsense about the ubiquitous acceptance of plannned parenthood as a hallmark of women’s rights…..fine. Go ahead. As wrong as that view is, we would be surprised if you authored a differing belief.
It is worth knowing that in the three days since the extreme left excoriations began, Komen has suffered the precise opposite of the “beatdown” result you forecast…….their donations have increased over 100%.

3 months, 1 week agoUnfortunately for this person who previously commented, and fortuately for your gleeful, Liberal heart, Lewis, Komen has since bowed to the pressure of losing the almighty dollar from those already swayed by the myths of Planned Parenthood. The fight for life for the unborn gets harder and harder. I would not be surprised to see Obama’s hands filling PP’s pockets with gold! Let’s pray that this will end in November 2012!
