Watch Mayor James bring down the house- literally
Kansas City Mayor Sly James donned a hard hat, got in a large backhoe and just ripped down part of a house Wednesday afternoon in the 4400 block of Brooklyn Ave.
Watch video here by Martin Augustine of KMBC.
The mayor announced a good plan today: Spend about $1 million by March 1 of 2013 to tear down 157 dangerous buildings.
He also wants the City Council to support a proposal to demolish the remaining 1,000 or so dangerous structures in the next two years.
It’s a pro-neighborhood initiative, one worth celebrating.
City Manager Troy Schulte told me the city might be able to use new use tax revenue of between $4 million to $5 million a year to finance the demolition idea.
Voter passage of the news half-cent sales tax in August helped create the use tax.
