Tornadoes too dangerous to chase

Everyday people who decide it would be cool to chase tornadoes and take pictures of the “pretty funnel clouds” have been watching too much TV.

A story in today’s Kansas City Star talks of people who for fun park on the roads to watch tornadoes and take pictures.

Tornadoes are dangerous and unpredictable. People who get caught in them are lucky to survive. Most don’t.

On a drive to Seattle in 1986 while crossing Nebraska, a tractor-trailer roared by me on Interstate 80. I looked around wondering what prompted him to zoom past at more than 90 mph.

In the distance to the north I got my answer. A funnel cloud had touched down and was kicking up a lot of dust about a mile away.

I stepped on the gas, too, going as fast as four cylinders in that old VW van allow.
