The Meaning of Mother’s Day
Remember the moment –
—when Mother nursed you and first fed you solid food;
—when Mother bathed you and wrapped your little body with her warm love;
—when Mother showed you how to use a spoon and fork;
—when Mother held you tight and told you “I love you”
—when Mother took your hand to help you take your first step;
—when Mother taught you how to tie your shoelaces;
—when Mother held your tiny hand and taught you how to write;
—when Mother drove you to your sports or school activities;
—when Mother encouraged you and cheered for each step of progress and success;
—when Mother listened to your school stories;
—when Mother sang lullabies at your bedtime;
—when Mother taught you how to count 1-2-3 with your fingers;
—when Mother told you bedtime stories thousands of times till you fell asleep;
—when Mother prepared your favorite food after you got back from school
—when Mother wiped your tears in sad moment;
—when Mother repeatedly gave you unwanted advice;
—when Mother was there for you no matter what;
—when Mother stayed in the ER room with you;
—when Mother accepted you as the unique best;
—when Mother laughed with you and cried with you …
Remember the thousands of little things that our mothers have done for us. Now after we have become strong and independent, it is our turn to take care our mother who is no longer as strong as we are, to listen to her patiently as she once listened to us, to hold out our strong hands for her frail body, to be there for her as she was there for us.
Sometimes, our mother might tell us something that she forgot she has told us thousands of times already.
Be patient. Don’t interrupt her. Don’t remind her of her poor memory. Don’t make her feel she is old and useless. Love her as she loves her baby. To me, that’s the meaning of Mother’s Day.
