The ACA survived the court, now will it survive politics?

Midwest Voices contributing columnist: George Harris

The Kansas City Star

A law is constitutional if five current Supreme Court justices say it is. Not what five former justices may have thought. Not what five future justices may think. Not what you think or I think.

If you value our system, get over complaining about the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Focus, if you want, on electing people who will reform, gut or repeal the law.

Your opponents will be focusing on retaining the president, retaining a majority in the Senate and earning a majority in the House.

The November elections provide all of us an opportunity to advocate for our interests.

That’s democracy. Ain’t it great?

I will focus on exactly that George. Electing people who will repeal the law. What a sad day for America when we can be told by the nanny state what to buy—a true travesty.

As Chief Justice Roberts notes - it is not a mandate forcing you to buy anything. It is a tax on individuals who make more than a certain amount of money who decide not to buy health-care insurance. You are perfectly free to not buy coverage. You just can’t avoid paying the tax if you make that choice.
