Streetcar chugs closer to reality in Kansas City
Kansas City appears to be putting together a streetcar system like that old Johnny Cash hit, “One Piece at a Time.”
The Mid-American Regional Council’s transportation committee hopes to shuttle federal grants amounting to $18 million to help fund the city’s streetcar plan. The Kansas City Star today reports that about $16 million of that money will be used to purchase four streetcars for the two-mile route along Main Street between the Union Station and the River Market.
The tracks, a power source and digging up the street are all that remain — along with a vote in the transportation development district on ponying up the mere $82 million for the $100 million project. People will cast ballots on a sales tax and property tax assessments needed to fund the project.
